The University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive and the Mardigian Library are among the hosts of a day of programming Nov. 9 called “We Remember: Kristallnacht Commemoration” during the Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Metropolitan Detroit's Annual Book Fair.
The fair, which runs through Nov. 2-Nov. 13, is a community-wide cultural and literary event, attracting a large and varied audience of more than 20,000 people of all ages. It is the oldest and largest Jewish book fair in the nation.
“The partnerships we have developed with the JCC of Metropolitan Detroit and the JCC of Ann Arbor have become integral pieces of our civic and educational outreach efforts. These collaborations also help get the word out about what an important resource our interviews are for the community,” said Jamie Wraight, curator and historian, Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive.
Other groups sponsoring the day of programming include Children of Holocaust Survivors Association of Michigan (CHAIM), Hidden Children & Child Survivors of Michigan, Holocaust Memorial Center, Jewish Senior Life, Program for Holocaust Survivors & Families and the World Federation of Jewish Child Survivors of the Holocaust.
The Voice/Vision Archive has a longstanding partnership with the JCC. For instance, the Archive co-sponsored several events for the JCC last year including discussions by authors Dan Porat and Sheila Isenberg at the 2010 book fair. On the same day, the Archive co-sponsored a discussion by Michael Hirsh, author of the book The Liberators: America’s Witness to the Holocaust at the JCC’s Ann Arbor book fair.
In May, the Archive again partnered with both organizations, co-sponsoring films for their film festivals. Wraight introduced the film Inside Hana’s Suitcase at the JCC of Greater Ann Arbor’s Jewish Film Festival. Wraight gave a short presentation on the importance of Holocaust film and the work conducted at the Voice/Vision Archive. Wraight also introduced Grace Paley: Collected Shorts at the JCC of Metropolitan Detroit.
