They would be wise to heed his advice. The UM-Dearborn junior competed in the event twice as a high school student. And he and his teammate took home the top prize in robotics his senior year.
“It was a great learning experience to be able to build something on the spot without any preparation ahead of time,” he said. “Talking to members of the Formula SAE and Baja teams about the programs here was the reason I decided to attend UM-Dearborn.”
These days, Basnaw works the event, which offers high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to test their skills in one of four areas: robotics, programming, simulation and game design.
Nearly 210 students from 44 high schools competed in this year’s event. Teams from Southgate Anderson High School, Troy High School, and Kalamazoo AMSC each earned 1st place finishes:
Robotics:
1st place: Southgate Anderson, Ryan Sander and Thomas Jozwiak
2nd place: Rochester Adams High School, Tyler Del Rose and Miles McGruder
3rd place: Canton High School, Alex Yue and William Zhang
Simulation:
1st place: Troy High School, Aditya Das and Frank Boudon
2nd place: Edsel Ford High School, Paul Pursifull and Errick Lisk
Game Design:
1st place: Kalamazoo AMSC, Parker Russcher and Bill Baldwin
2nd place: William Dr. Ford Career-Technical Center, Thomas Cargle and Andrew McGuire
Programming:
1st place: Kalamazoo AMSC, Abhay Goel and Kyle Milka
2nd place: Detroit Country Day, Aaron Zeng and Jackie Brendenberg
3rd place: Kalamazoo AMSC, Jacob Naranjo and Katherine Wu
