External Awards
Oleg Zikanov, professor, mechanical engineering, received $299,746 from the National Science Foundation. He will collaborate with researchers in Germany to investigate heat and mass transfer in flows of liquid metals affected by very strong magnetic fields.
Chris Mi, associate professor, electrical and computer engineering, received $134,988 from the Ford Motor Company. He will study the safety of lithium ion battery design by focusing on how the existing battery designs respond to overcharge and short circuit faults.
Dohoy Jung, assistant professor, mechanical engineering, received $40,000 additional funding from Ford Motor Company. He will continue a project to develop a virtual computer simulation program for diesel engine development and testing.
Mike Twiner, assistant professor, natural sciences, received a $35,000 grant from the Research Corporation for Science Advancement. He will investigate the inhibitory effects of various algal toxins on phosphatase enzyme activity.
Justin Saarinen, lecturer, natural sciences, received $6,987 additional funding from the U.S. Geological Survey. He will continue to study the quality of water runoff from coastal watersheds by using a GIS-based landscape model.

IRB Meeting Dates: 2012-2013 AY
All studies that involve human subjects must undergo a review by the Dearborn IRB. Studies that pose more than minimal risk to the subjects will need to be reviewed by the full IRB at one of their monthly meetings. IRB applications may be submitted at any time but studies that require full board review must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the IRB meeting.
