Library offers new Hold Request service
Need an item from the library’s collection? Beginning in January 2013, UM-Dearborn faculty, staff and students can now place a Hold Request online anytime for items in the library’s collection. Hold Requests placed Monday through Thursday will be filled within 24 hours. Requests placed Friday through Sunday will be filled the following Monday, or the next business day following a library closure. The item will be held at the Circulation Desk for seven days.
Holds on items that have been checked out will be filled as soon as they are returned to the library. Anyone requesting an item that is missing from the shelves will be notified by e-mail that the item is currently unavailable. A MeLCat request could be made instead for items that are either missing or currently checked-out.
You can take it with you…Reference books now circulate!
If you’ve ever wished you could take a reference book out of the library for a brief period of time, your wish has been granted! Books in the library’s Reference Collection are no longer for library use only. UM-Dearborn faculty, staff and students can now check these books out for a one-week loan. This includes books in the library’s College and Career Reference section.
Reminder: Architecture of Murder exhibit currently on display at the library
“The Architecture of Murder: The Auschwitz-Birkenau Blueprints” exhibit, sponsored by the Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive and the Mardigian Library, opened on Sunday, January 20, 2013. The exhibit, on loan from American Society for Yad Vashem, includes photographs, documents, and text panels, as well as blueprints of the camp that document its development and expansion. It also contains poetry by Paul Celan and a short audio-visual presentation.
The exhibit is on the second floor of the Mardigian Library and can be viewed during library hours. View library hours.
The exhibit closes on Sunday, February 24, 2013, and will feature a discussion of the camp and the exhibit by Award winning author Robert Jan van Pelt, professor of architecture at the University of Waterloo. Van Pelt’s discussion begins at 2 p.m. on the second floor of the library.
Light refreshments will be served at the closing event.

The Mardigian Library currently has a trial of the following database:
World of Higher Education Database
Available through January 31, 2013
The “World of Higher Education Database” includes the online format of the “International Handbook of Universities”. This directory includes information on 17,000 universities from over 180 countries. It also includes information on the higher education system of each country.
We encourage you to try this online resource and give us some feedback. A positive review does not guarantee that we will have funds to acquire the item, but it could help us determine whether we should pursue this item when funds are available. You may send your feedback to: [email protected].
