Chancellor’s updates
Interim Chancellor Gabriella Scarlatta provided the following university updates:
- UM-Dearborn recently launched a Dearborn Adult Success Initiative pilot program, which goes hand-in-hand with Governor Whitmer’s 60x30 goals. This partnership with the Diploma Equity Project targets students who are age 25 and older. Each student receives dedicated support and progress monitoring, including a success coach. There are 101 students participating in the pilot.
- On Nov. 19, UM-Dearborn held its annual Chancellor’s Staff Recognition Awards. This year, the university celebrated 55 milestone anniversaries, including eight staff members who have been with the university for 25 years or more. One of those, Bonnie Southerland, mail services manager, has been with UM-Dearborn for 40 years.
- Interim Provost Ghassan Kridli and Chancellor Scarlatta published an op-ed in Crain’s Detroit Business last week on the importance of admitting and keeping international students here in Michigan.

Executive Committee appointment
Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Weidong Xiang was appointed, retroactively, as an electrical and computer engineering representative to the College of Engineering and Computer Science Executive Committee for a partial term from Sept. 1, 2025 through Aug. 31, 2026.
State of Michigan Capital Outlay submission
The Dearborn campus submitted the Computer and Information Science Building renovation project for funding consideration again this year. The renovation would address infrastructure and provide updates to the existing building with a small addition to accommodate the program. The estimated cost of this project is $40 million.
