CASL microbiologist leads international collaboration on urban watershed microbiology

Sonia Tiquia-Arashiro, professor of microbiology at the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters, is the lead editor of Urban Watershed Microbiology, a new two-volume reference published by Springer.

The books grew out of an international collaboration involving 40 contributions from researchers in 24 countries across five continents. Together, they examine how microorganisms can help scientists understand the effects of urbanization on rivers, lakes and other freshwater ecosystems.

The collection brings together research on antimicrobial resistance, harmful algal blooms, emerging contaminants and microbial indicators of water quality, while also exploring new approaches in metagenomics, watershed monitoring, modeling and bioremediation.

Volume 1 focuses on metagenomics, antimicrobial resistance and advances in watershed monitoring. Volume 2 explores environmental indicators, watershed challenges from different regions of the world and bioremediation strategies.

The project reflects Tiquia-Arashiro's broader research interests in environmental microbiology and the use of microbial science and biotechnology to better understand and protect water resources.
