“In recent years, educators and policymakers have come to understand the critical role that early childhood education plays in establishing a strong foundation for later academic success,” said Edward Silver, dean of the School of Education. “The need for talented leaders in this field continues to grow. Participants in this program will advance their knowledge regarding the design and delivery of high-quality programs for young children and their families.”
The 30-credit hour degree has been developed with both certified and non-certified professionals in mind. Two program options were developed for teachers who are certified in the state of Michigan. The Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education with the Early Childhood Endorsement (ZS) program is designed for those elementary teachers wishing to gain competency in the general and special education of young children birth to eight. The Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education with Early Childhood Special Education Inclusion UM-Dearborn Certificate is a non-endorsement program for teachers holding an Early Childhood (ZA/ZS) endorsement and provides significant knowledge and skills for teaching children with disabilities using a transdisciplinary inclusive approach.
Individuals who are not certified teachers but are interested in early childhood leadership and administration can participate in the Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education for Early Childhood Administration and Leadership. This program will serve professionals who need further preparation in supervision, and field experience in administration and leadership.
Courses are flexible and developed with the working professional in mind, with most classes available during evening and summer hours, along with several online courses. More information is available on the School of Education website.
