Tips for Academic Success
Managing Your Time
· Make a list of what you have to do, such as school projects, family, social, work or anything that requires your attention. Make sure to list any deadlines.
· Use a planner/calendar to help you “map” things out. Break each assignment into smaller “bites.” This will allow you to plan out what you need to do, instead of becoming overwhelmed by all of the details at once. Make sure you include test and quiz dates, as well as deadlines for important assignments or projects.
· Keep a journal. Each day, record what you want to accomplish, and if you did. If you didn’t, write down why. This record will show you how you have changed your study habits. It will also help you determine what you need to work on to improve your habits.
· Work on assignments a little bit each day. This makes them more manageable.

· Keep up with your coursework. Once you get behind, it can be a battle to get caught up. If you have breaks between classes, use that for study/review time.
· Get in the habit of writing down each daily assignment for each course you have. Check it off once it is finished.
· You should be studying 2-3 hours per week for each hour you are in class. In other words, if you have a three credit course, you should be studying 6-9 hours per week for it.
· Go over the assigned readings before the lecture. This way, you can make notes and ask for clarification on concepts you don’t understand.
· Keep in mind that studying isn’t just reading your textbook or looking at your notes. It includes research, working with classmates, meetings with your instructor, etc.
· When you sit down to study, make sure you have all of the necessary materials in front of you: notes, textbook(s), study guide, etc.
