DOE GATE Center for Electric Drive Transportation


The Center for Electric Drive Transportation (CEDT) at the University of Michigan-Dearborn is established in 2011 with a grant from the U. S. Department of Energy's Graduate Automotive Technology Education (GATE) Program.

 

The GATE Program was first established in 1998 with 5 centers. This year (2011), it marks the third generation of 7 GATE Centers:

- University of Michigan - Dearborn

- Purdue University

- The Ohio State University

- Pennsylvania State University

- Clemson University

- The University of Colorado & Colorado Springs

- University of Alabama

 

DOE's GATE initiative will award $6.4 million over the course of 5 years to support those 7 Centers of Excellence at American colleges, universities, and university-affiliated research institutions. The awardees will focus on 3 critical automotive technology areas: hybrid propulsion, energy storage, and lightweight materials. By funding curriculum development and expansion as well as laboratory work, GATE allows higher education institutions to develop multidisciplinary training. As a result, GATE promotes the development of a skilled workforce of engineering professionals who will overcome technical barriers and help commercialize the next generation of advanced automotive technologies. 

 

As one of the seven university research centers that were awarded the prestigious grants, CEDT is dedicated to achieving the synergy among technological development, research and graduate education in automotive engineering, with a focus on the following thrust areas that are crucial for the development of electric drive transportation:

 

• Power electronics and electric machines
• Hybrid powertrain control and power management
• Battery management and control
• Thermal management of Electric Drive Vehicles (EDV)
• Vehicle to Grid (V2G), charging infrastructure, grid impact of EDV
• Reliability, diagnostics, and prognostics of EDV
• Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) of EDV

June 3, 2014 - Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) Meeting, Dearborn, MI

Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) Meeting was held on Tuesday June 3, 2014 12 p.m. at the Institute for Advanced Vehicle Systems (IAVS) building Room 2004, University of Michigan - Dearborn, MI 48128. New classes and revised classes offered through the GATE program have been reviewed. Three GATE fellows presented their research topics.

August 21, 2014 - 2-Day Training Session: Leveraging Simulation for Hybrid and Electric Powertrain Design in the Aerospace, Automotive and Transportation Industries

The 2-day training session of "Leveraging Simulation for Hybrid and Electric Powertrain Design in the Aerospace, Automotive and Transportation Industries" is sponsored by ANSYS, Inc. and University of Michigan - Dearborn, GATE Center for Electric Drive Transportation.

 

The one-day seminar features key industry and ANSYS experts on Hybrid and Electric Powertrain design. This session covers advanced electric machine design and consider electromagnetic, thermal and structural phenomena as well as wireless power transfer, full powertrain system simulation, EMI prediction/prevention and lithium-ion battery modeling.

 

The one-day workshop involves work alongside ANSYS simulation experts to try improve your simulation skills and put new knowledge to the test.

The 1-day workshop of "Wireless Power Transfer" is sponsored by IEEE Transportation Electrification Initiative, IEEE Southeastern Michigan Section, ANSYS, Inc. and University of Michigan - Dearborn, GATE Center for Electric Drive Transportation. 7 distinguished speakers will discuss the latest progress in wireless charging for electric vehicle applications. A panel will be organized comprised primarily of industry speakers.

April 18, 2013 - 2-Day Training Course: Optimal Design and Simulation of Electric Machines and Drives

The 2-Day Optimal Design and Simulation of Electric Machines and Drives Training Course is taught by leading international experts jointly organized and sponsored by the University of Michigan - Dearborn (GATE Center for Electric Drive Transportation, ANSYS, Inc. and Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA). The course will equip attendees with the theory and advanced simulation techniques required to effectively design electric machines and associated control systems. March 14, 2012 - A Free 3-Day Training Course on EV, HEV, and PHEV is offered by GATE CEDT

The GATE Center for Electric Drive Transportation at the University of Michigan-Dearborn is pleased to offer a low-cost, three-day training seminar for the GATE partner companies. Participants that complete all three days of training will be awarded 2.4 CEUs (continuing education units) upon request.

February 5, 2012 - Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at UMD Invites Applications for a Tenure-track Faculty Position

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Michigan-Dearborn invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position. Consideration is primarily at the Assistant Professor level but applicants with outstanding experience at the Associate Professor and Professor levels will also be considered. Research thrust areas of interest include power systems, smart grids, and sustainable energy. The successful candidate is expected to develop strongly funded research to enhance the power/energy program in the department.
