Credit for Co-Op/Internship
The CECS Experiential Learning Program
The College of Engineering & Computer Science recognizes that experience-based learning, through cooperative education and internship programs, is an integral component to a student's college experience that provides life-changing learning opportunities. The CECS Experiential Learning Program provides opportunities for students to "engineer today" while attending class.
Experiential Learning Registration Options
Students may choose to officially register with the university for either co-op Degree credit or Additive credit both registrations are considered Full-Time student status for the term of registration. When a student completes two or more official university registered co-op (degree or additive) assignments the notation "CECS Co-Op Program Completed" is recorded on the student’s academic transcript upon graduation. Further recognition, is received through the Cooperative Education Certificate, issued by the Office of the Dean.
In addition, a student may elect to unofficially register through Self-Reporting. CECS is always interested to learn and hear about students degree-related experiential learning experiences and encourages students to Self-Report in lieu of officially being registered. In Self-Reporting, students through short evaluations share their work experiences which will support CECS in continuously improving students over-all educational experiences, advances employer partnerships and enhance curriculum.
Registration Options:
- Degree Credit for Co-op (ENGR. 399), Full-Time Student Status
- Additive Co-op Credit, Full-Time Student Status
- Self-Report Internship
Course: ENGR.399 - 1 credit, ***Department Approval Required & Tuition is Associated. Will be Considered Full-Time with enrollment in ENGR.399***
Students must submit a job description, detailing their co-op responsibilities, start date and company contact information. The job description must be on company letter and submitted to the CECS Experiential Learning Office to: [email protected] as an attachment. Deadline: May 6, 2024
NOTE:
- Departmental review and "approval" must be granted prior to registration for ENGR 399.
- Student may elect (register) no more than two additional academic courses (8 credits) during the same term.
- All F-1, Visa Students must register for ENGR. 399 to participate in CPT through the College of Engineering & Computer Science Experiential Learning Program
- Registration in ENGR.399 course, a student has university official registration and considered a full-time student
- The 1 Technical Credit from ENGR.399 can NOT be awarded for past internships or degree related experiences.
- **NOTE: All students are encouraged to consult with their academic advisor and financial aid to determine how the credit (ENGR.399) will work into their degree program plan and impact aid/scholarships.
Overview: ENGR.399-Professional Practice in Engineering & Computer Science
- CIS, ECE & IMSE majors satisfy - Technical Elective and Experiential Honors Program
- ME/BioEngineering majors satisfy - General Professional Elective Group and Experiential Honors Program
Benefits:
- The student co-op experience is a more in-depth robust academic and practical experience
- Meets one of the required courses for the CECS Experiential Learning Honors Program
- A department Faculty Advisor is assigned to student
- Student receives letter grade
- Paid experience
- Completion of two co-op rotations (courses), earn Designation on Official Transcript and Recognition/Merit from the CECS Dean.
Requirements for Registration:
- CECS Departmental Approval of co-op job description
- The position (co-op) must be Full-Time (34+hrs per week and 12 to 15 weeks per term)
- Prerequisites: (Permission from instructor to register for ENGR-399)
- CIS 275 or
- ECE 210, 273 or
- IMSE 255, 317 or
- ME 230 or 260, ENGR 126, 216, 250
Courses - CIS, ECE, IMSE & ME: 299, 399, 499 - (each section is 1 credit)

- Registration in any of the above courses a student has university official registration and considered a full-time student **

- Completion of Two Coop Rotations (courses), earn Designation on University official Transcript and Dean's Recognition/Merit from the CECS Dean's Office.
- Receive a Pass/Fail Grade
- Maintain student status enrollment with university
- Maintain university student status for: Financial Aid, healthcare/auto insurance coverage and registration priority
- Receive employer feedback thru evaluations

Requirements:
- Internship can be either a full or part-time degree related experience
- Be either a declared CECS major or Pre-Engineering major
