Active U Autumn registration begins Sept. 11

Sometimes a friendly competition is all it takes to make a step toward healthier living.

Water Trophy

Just ask University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Office of Admissions and Orientation.

The staff recently competed against UM-Ann Arbor’s admissions staff in a Water Hydration Contest. The challenge? Keep track of how much water you drink for three weeks. Every eight ounces equaled a point for your team.

More than 14,000 ounces later, UM-Dearborn’s staff members were declared the victors and an annual tradition was put in place: the presentation of the Water Hydration trophy.

“Our staff not only learned about the importance of water and being hydrated, they had some fun with it too,” said Lorie Domingue, customer service associate. “We plan to make this an annual challenge between the Ann Arbor and Dearborn Admissions Offices.”

This fall, MHealthy again will get the competitive juices flowing with Active U Autumn. The six-week challenge encourages participants to get moving and track their physical activity.

Registration opens tomorrow, September 11, and the program runs from October 2 – November 12.

Active U Autumn is open to University of Michigan faculty, staff, students, retirees and spouses/other qualified adults. Participants can join as a team or individual.

Highlights of the fall program include:

  • Ability to track physical activity minutes online or on a mobile device
  • Access to weekly team standings online
  • Access to healthy eating tips, recipes and portion size charts
  • Entry into the MHealthy November Grand Prize Drawing for a chance to win prizes valued up to $500 (for benefits-eligible faculty and staff)

More than 10,000 students, faculty and staff members from across the University of Michigan campuses participated in the first autumn event last year.

“Active U Autumn is a great way to keep motivated as winter approaches,” said Ginny Zarras, director, Human Resources. “Whether you sign up as an individual or as part of a team, participating in MHealthy events can help our campus stay active now that the academic year has started again.”

The fun begins early this year, as UM-Dearborn will kickoff Active U Autumn with MGames Field Day.

One part Olympic Games and one part schoolyard field days, the event will include games, inflatables, giveaways and information on how to move more, eat smarter and manage stress.

Faculty, staff and students are welcome to join in the games Tuesday, October 2, from 12-2 p.m., on the University Center Patio.
