United Way campaign aims to assist area residents

She was married with two kids and worked in the automobile industry.

But her comfortable life quickly changed after Yolanda and her husband divorced, and she lost her job due to downsizing.

The metropolitan Detroit resident couldn't support her family on unemployment and child support, so she swallowed her pride and called United Way’s 2-1-1 information and referral service.

It proved to be a wise decision. 2-1-1 staff connects clients with resources for shelter, food assistance programs, mental health services and other basic necessities.

With encouragement from United Way, Yolanda again is employed and able to support her family.

University of Michigan-Dearborn faculty and staff have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of area residents, like Yolanda, by participating in this year’s United Way for Southeastern Michigan campaign. The campaign again focuses on areas that provide lasting solutions to the critical issues facing southeast Michigan.

And there’s never been an easier way to donate. This year, UM-Dearborn faculty and staff can give to the United Way electronically through Wolverine Access. Under the Faculty and Staff tab, the United Way link is listed as an Announcement. No paper forms are required, although they can be used if a donor prefers it.

This year’s goal is to have at least 25 percent participation among UM-Dearborn faculty and staff.

“We’re getting there, but we need your help to reach our goal and address the issues facing southeast Michigan,” said campaign Chair Patti Martin.
