Bioengineering, education specialist degrees approved for UM-Dearborn

The University of Michigan Board of Regents recently approved two new degree programs for UM-Dearborn: a Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science and an Education Specialist degree in the School of Education.

The bachelor's degree in bioengineering, which will launch in January, will address the needs of undergraduate students who are interested in this rapidly growing field of study. As the campus's mechanical engineering department continues to improve academic standards and program quality, it is crucial to recruit and retain high-quality students. This new program will help attract and prepare students for this fast-growing engineering field and will contribute to a diversifying Michigan economy.

The SOE has established an education specialist degree (Ed.S). This degree addresses the need for an Ed.S. degree with a metropolitan focus in the Detroit area. This degree is an excellent fit to UM-Dearborn's mission to provide the citizens of southeast Michigan with relevant programming that is well-matched to the economic, social and political challenges facing our region. The Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan, gave its support to this new program in June. The program will be a non-Rackham degree.
