Emily Saarinen, assistant professor of biology in the Department of Natural Sciences, completed a three-day workshop at Kellogg Biological Station in Hickory Corners, Mich. She is part of the prestigious National Science Foundation program FIRST IV (Faculty Institutes for Reforming Science Teaching). Saarinen worked with 24 other teaching professionals on methods and implementation strategies to improve undergraduate education centered on creating student-centered classrooms and engaging students in cutting-edge scientific material. Together with her peers in ecology from the University of Connecticut, University of Nebraska-Omaha, University of Illinois and Michigan State University, Saarinen developed a new module to help students link the important biological concepts of succession and disturbance. She will be working on this module with her ecology (BIOL 304) students in the fall 2012 semester.
Taehyung Kim, associate professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering received a 2012 Best Paper Prize (Best Magazine Article, 2nd Place) from IEEE Industry Application Society (IAS) for his paper "Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Scooter-Development of Zero-Emission Vehicles," co-authored with O. Vodyakho, and J. Yang.

Kathleen Hatke Aro (’02, M.B.A.) will receive the Eleanor Josaitis Unsung Hero Award tonight at the Free Press and the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition’s Shining Light Regional Cooperation Awards ceremony. Hatke Aro, president of the Accounting Aid Society, will be recognized for the tax help she and AAS have provided to thousands of families in need. The Detroit Free Press highlights her work.
