As the world navigates the coronavirus pandemic, University of Michigan-Dearborn recognizes that current and prospective students are facing unprecedented challenges and new realities. In order to support students and help them prepare for success today and in the future, the university has modified some policies to make the admissions and registration process easier.
“At UM-Dearborn, our students always come first. In response to the pandemic, we quickly transitioned to remote instruction of classes to allow our students to still graduate on time, provided a pass/fail grading option for winter 2020 courses, and eased the summer registration process to help those coping with this crisis. Our commitment to providing our students with every opportunity remains unwavering,” said Susan E. Alcock, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs.
Test Optional for Fall 2021
Understanding that the standardized testing cycle has been disrupted by the pandemic, the university has temporarily suspended this requirement for Fall 2021 applicants. These students are encouraged to provide test scores, if they are able, but they will not be required for admission.
UM-Dearborn is also working with Fall 2020 applicants who have already provided scores and were planning to retest, and working with those that have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and have demonstrated academic success through specific coursework.
“We understand what a challenging time this is for high school students and are working to be supportive and flexible,” said Melissa Stone, vice provost for enrollment management.
Accepting Additional Transfer Credits
The university also is making accommodations for transfer students, recognizing that the abrupt transition to online education they experienced was likely challenging. UM-Dearborn will accept all courses that were offered online as long as they are posted on the transcript. Courses taken in the Winter 2020 semester, if otherwise transferrable, will be granted credit if the grade is deemed as Pass/Satisfactory from transferring institutions. These courses, if applicable, will fulfill general education and degree requirements.
New Emergency Student Grant Funding Available
The university is also identifying ways to assist students with financial challenges due to the coronavirus. Under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, students now have access to additional emergency grant funding for related expenses, including food, housing, course materials, technology, health care and child care. The university aims to assist as many students as possible in meeting their emergency financial needs during this challenging time. All students are eligible if they have a valid FAFSA (there is still time to file) and were enrolled in a program that met on-campus prior to the transition to remote delivery due to COVID-19. Eligible students should complete the application for COVID-19 emergency assistance. Under these guidelines, international students and students enrolled exclusively in an online program are not eligible to receive funding but can still apply to our Student Immediate Relief Fund.
Reducing fees for Summer 2020 Registration
In recognition of the decreased campus services provided during remote instruction, such as parking, Wellness Center access, food service, the university has reduced the summer registration fee by $100 for each session and has removed all course (lab) fees.
Planning for Fall
Guided by the recommendations of the State of Michigan, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, public health professionals and our University of Michigan colleagues, UM-Dearborn leadership is working on planning for various teaching scenarios for the fall term. All decisions in this area will be guided by two principles: The health and safety of our campus community and our commitment to continuing to offer our students an education and experience worthy of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The university expects to communicate more information regarding fall plans by June 30.
