The latest from the Office of Metropolitan Impact

Second Annual Community Engagement Day

In close collaboration with faculty, staff and student leaders from across campus, the Office of Metropolitan Impact will recognize, highlight and award the many ways in which we are all engaged in our metropolitan community through research, service, volunteerism and related activities at the 2nd Annual Engagement Day celebration (Friday, January 22, 2016). The entire UM-Dearborn campus and its community partners, alumni and other community organizations will celebrate in a robust sharing of stories, programs, research and related activities throughout the day. Engagement Day will wrap up the MLK Week of Celebration on campus and there also will be plenty of opportunities for networking.

As part of this event, we are currently seeking students and alumni to share their engagement work. There are only a few slots left and faculty, staff and community presenter slots have been filled. These projects include everything from service projects to community-based research to other various events or projects. Presenters can either have a poster/table display or sign up for a stage presentation with a slideshow/PowerPoint/lecture/skit/etc.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please complete the following form.

If you are not able to present, please plan on attending and invite your partners in the community. It promises to be an informative, uplifting event!

Public Allies Metro Detroit

A new cohort of metro Detroit leaders has started its AmeriCorps year of service with Public Allies Metro Detroit! Thirty committed, passionate and engaged individuals will spend the next 10 months serving their community at nonprofit organizations across the metro Detroit area including Neighbors Building Brightmoor, Alternatives for Girls and The Henry Ford Health System. Allies also will receive more than 320 hours of intense leadership development training focused on personal growth, community change, social justice and current events in Detroit.

Community members, families, and supporters learned about the service that Allies on are doing on Thursday, December 10, at the third annual Meet the Allies event. Allies introduced themselves to the community and shared their experiences in their community and with Public Allies Metro Detroit. Ismael Ahmed, associate provost and senior advisor to the chancellor for metropolitan impact, shared the vision for Public Allies and the great service Allies will continue to provide to their community. Alana Gracey from Alternatives for Girls also shared her experience working with Damona Platt, a second year Ally who is continuing her service from last year.
