Campus Grants – Call for Proposals
Applications for the first round of Campus Grants for this academic year are due by October 15. The specific grants being reviewed this fall are listed below:
- EIC Environmental-Sustainability Research Grants – (Up to $12,000) The Environmental Interpretive Center and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs provide funds to tenured or tenure-track faculty for research and scholarship related to sustainability, conservation and/or environmental education and research. Awards are provided for projects that foster high quality scholarship and research, have the potential to be sustainable, will result in tangible products such as papers, presentations, or grant proposals, and will result in a proposal for external funding.
- Faculty Research Initiation and Seed Grants – (Up to $6,000) Provide financial support for research and scholarship by full-time Dearborn faculty to support projects that foster high-quality scholarship and research, relate to the applicant’s professional career goals, will result in a proposal for external funding and have a strong possibility to be funded externally.
- Faculty Research Support and Maintenance Grants – (Up to $6,000) Provide financial support for research and scholarship by full-time Dearborn faculty to support projects that foster high-quality scholarship and research, relate to the applicant’s professional career goals, and are in fields, or for scholarly work, where external grant support is unlikely.
- Lecturer Professional Development Grants – (Up to $550) Awarded in support of professional development activities of Dearborn lecturers covered by LEO contract.
- Small Grants for Faculty Research – (Up to $800) Provide modest funds to full-time faculty for projects that foster scholarship and research and relate to the applicant’s scholarship goals. Faculty salaries may not be charged to these grants.
- Student Group Travel to Present Research Results – (Up to $1,500) Grants support groups of students (from one lab, student club or department) to cover some of the costs of traveling to national professional meetings to present papers based on research conducted at UM-Dearborn. Funds will normally not be provided for state or regional meetings. Due to limited funding, a given student may receive only one grant (group or individual) in a year and only one presenter of a multi-author paper may apply.
- Tenured and Tenure-Track Faculty Professional Development Grants – (Up to $550) Awarded in support of professional development activities of Dearborn tenured and tenure-track faculty.
- Undergraduate Research Fellowships – (Up to $2,500) Provide up to six fellowships to UM-Dearborn undergraduate students whose academic record demonstrates preparedness and commitment to excellence and who are invited by a UM-Dearborn faculty adviser to conduct independent research under their direction.
- CASL Faculty Summer Research Grants – (Up to $7,000) The College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs provide funds to tenured or tenure-track faculty for research and other scholarly activities to support projects that foster high-quality scholarship and research, relate to the applicant’s professional career goals and support work that will lead to a proposal for external funding (in disciplines where external funding is available).
- CASL Senior Faculty Grants to Encourage and Reward Scholarship – (Up to $3,500) The College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs provide up to two awards to tenured CASL faculty—one to an eligible associate professor and one to an eligible full professor. The award consists of one course release (for a 3- or 4-credit course, Fall or Winter term of the academic year following the approval of the application) OR a stipend of $3,500. Stipends will be paid during the term the work is done: Fall, Winter or Summer term of the academic year following the approval of the application.

External Grants Received
Monotonic tensile and fatigue behavior of bar steels subjected to constant and overload amplitude loading
Hong-Tae Kang, Mechanical Engineering, has received an award of $12,850 from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). The objectives of this project are to obtain the monotonic tensile and fatigue properties of the materials provided by AISI.
Team Detroit employee satisfaction
Timothy Davis, iLabs, College of Business, has received an award of $18,250 from Team Detroit to collect employee feedback that will be used to form a baseline cultural assessment of the organization.
Supporting efficient discrete box queries for large-scale genome sequence databases
Qiang Zhu, Computer & Information Science, has received a three-year award of $222,277 from the National Science Foundation for collaboration with a Michigan State University professor to research bioinformatics and make available efficient, on-disk approaches for storing and querying large-scale genome sequence databases.
DTW Airport impact study
Lee Redding and Timothy Davis, College of Business, have received an award of $50,000 from Wayne County Airport Authority to conduct an economic impact study for Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport in terms of income generation and job creation.
Commercialization research and preparation for context-aware security and privacy techniques for RFID applications
Di Ma, Computer & Information Science, has received an award of $50,000 from the National Science Foundation to investigate the commercial feasibility of transitioning context-aware security and privacy techniques developed by the PI into the real market through market study.
Development of thin-film cryo-preservable scaffolds
Nilay Chakraborty, Mechanical Engineering, has received an award of $40,000 from Somnio Global, to develop a system for optimal cryopreservation of mammalian cells impregnated in an artificial scaffold material. This grant was matched with $40,000 from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation under the Small Company Innovation Program (SCIP). This was one of two Dearborn winners under the SCIP program.
Plane bending fatigue characteristics of various sheet steels
Hong-Tae Kang and German Reyes-Villanueva, Mechanical Engineering, have received an award of $10,000 from ThyssenKrupp USA to obtain the fatigue strength of various sheet steels using plane bending fatigue tests.
