Additional Earned College Credit Options

UM-Dearborn awards college credit for the following tests based on certain scores earned. Please review the following information and charts below to determine additional credit earning opportunities. 

Advanced Level (A, AS)

UM-Dearborn offers credit for some Advanced (A) Level and Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level examinations, dependent upon subject matter. Exams administered by Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge International Examinations are acceptable; exams taken through other testing administrations will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

Advanced Placement (AP)

UM-Dearborn encourages high-achieving high school students to enroll in Advanced Placement (AP) courses and take the AP exams. Scores of 3 or better typically earn college credit at UM-Dearborn, with some exceptions. 

Credit for Education from Armed Forces/Military

Veterans and members of the active armed forces, National Guard, or Reserve component may be eligible to receive transfer credit for educational experiences completed through the military.

Credit recommendations for military service school training in the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Forces, published by the American Council on Education (ACE)*, will be considered for transfer credit.

Military credit is evaluated as follows:

• College-level credit: Credit recommended by ACE for college-level, baccalaureate-oriented military training and education will be evaluated according to UM-Dearborn's standard transfer credit policy.
• Vocational credit: Vocational credit related to a student's chosen curriculum will be decided by the academic department responsible for the related content for consideration through credit for prior learning. 
• Duplicate credit: Duplicate credit will not be awarded. Military credit cannot be used to double-count coursework for which a student has already earned a passing grade or for a course in which the student is currently enrolled after the 10th day of the semester.
• Degree requirements: The academic department offering the degree or program determines how military credit applies toward specific degree or program requirements.
• Residency requirement: Military credit may be used to meet University graduation requirements, except for the residency requirement. Students must complete at least 30 credits at UM-Dearborn to satisfy the University's residency requirement.

* ACE recommendations: The American Council on Education (ACE) works with the Department of Defense to evaluate military training and experiences and provide recommendations that colleges and universities can use when determining transferable academic credit. Learn more about ACE military evaluations.

Community College of the Air Force

Credits earned through the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) are evaluated in the same manner as credits earned at other colleges or universities and may be applied as transferable credit.

Students may petition their academic college for CCAF coursework that was not initially awarded transfer credit. Petitions must be submitted during the first semester of enrollment at UM-Dearborn.

College Level Exam Program (CLEP)

UM-Dearborn encourages students who took College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests to submit their scores electronically to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions prior to enrollment. To be eligible for credit, students must have enrolled in or after the Fall 2020 semester. Students cannot earn credit for tests that were taken after they enrolled at UM-Dearborn. Students who enroll at UM-Dearborn will work with an academic advisor to determine how these classes will apply to their degree program.

DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST)

UM-Dearborn encourages students who took DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) to submit their scores electronically to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions prior to enrollment. To be eligible for credit, students must have enrolled in or after the Fall 2020 semester. Students cannot earn credit for tests that were taken after they enrolled at UM-Dearborn. Students who enroll at UM-Dearborn will work with an academic advisor to determine how these classes will apply to their degree program.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

UM-Dearborn will award credit for exams offered through the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, which is available in participating IB high schools. Most subjects earn credit for equivalent UM-Dearborn courses. UM-Dearborn typically accepts IB higher-level (HL) exams as well as a few standard-level (SL) exams for credit.
