Mathematics & Statistics Colloquium: Mon, Nov 2 - When AI Solves Your Dream Problem
Mathematics & Statistics Colloquium: When AI Solves Your Dream Problem
Date: Monday, November 2, 2026
Time: 3:30–4:30 p.m.
Location: 2048 CB, University of Michigan–Dearborn
Speaker: Alan Wiggins, Associate Professor of Mathematics, UM-Dearborn
What happens when artificial intelligence claims to solve a mathematical problem that inspired a researcher’s career?
Join Professor Alan Wiggins for an accessible introduction to the Free Group Factor Isomorphism problem and a discussion of OpenAI’s claimed solution, as described in the talk abstract. Wiggins will explain what the problem asks, why it matters, and why the proposed result—if correct—would be surprising. No prior familiarity with the mathematical terms is assumed.
Beyond this particular problem, the talk invites us to consider important questions about AI and research: How do we evaluate AI-generated mathematical claims? What counts as convincing evidence? And how can researchers respond thoughtfully when AI enters their field?
Whether you’re interested in mathematics, AI, or the future of discovery, come explore these questions and join the conversation.
Refreshments will be provided.
