New Fellow on Campus

In 2017, electrical engineering student Jalen Rose was so moved by his first Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trip, he returned to campus on a mission to grow the program at UM-Dearborn. Two years later, student participation in ASB has nearly tripled — an accomplishment that recently helped earn Rose a nod as a 2019 Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellow. 

Now a senior, Rose plans to use the leadership training from the yearlong fellowship to keep building momentum for what he calls a life-changing student program.

Higher Education Leader Joins UM-Dearborn

Melissa Stone joined UM-Dearborn as the vice provost of enrollment management in September.

Stone has 20-plus years of higher education experience — the last 14 leading enrollment efforts at the University of Delaware, the largest university in the state. There, she created an inclusive student service center so learners didn’t have to travel to more than one office to get answers. Stone will focus on efforts regarding recruitment, retention and student success.

A first-generation college student, Stone has an M.B.A. from Niagara University and an Enrollment Management Certification from Noel-Levitz.

Mobility Initiative Comes to Dearborn

A campus bike share program gives anyone with an @umich.edu email a convenient and free way to explore campus and Dearborn’s downtowns.

Bike rental stations, run by Zagster, are available near the University Center, The Union at Dearborn and Fairlane Center. Each station includes five bikes equipped with a basket to hold riders’ personal items. For comfort and safety, each one-speed bike has an adjustable seat, rear and front lights and an electronic Bluetooth lock.

The university’s bikes work with the City of Dearborn’s bike share infrastructure, which includes 11 stations throughout Dearborn.
