Brown University and Sydney Tragedies (Dec. 15, 2025)

Dear Colleagues,

Like all of you, we are devastated over the tragic events this weekend at Brown University and in Sydney, Australia.

We recognize these tragedies, though many miles away, may still feel very personal for many on our campus. It is important that we take care of ourselves and one another. Students who need assistance during this difficult emotional time can receive help through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Faculty and staff may seek support through the Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office (FASCCO).

While neither incident has any direct connection to UM-Dearborn, out of an abundance of caution, the Department of Public Safety will increase its presence on campus to ensure everyone’s safety and peace of mind.

The well-being of our fellow students and colleagues at Brown, as well as the Hanukkah celebrants in Sydney, will remain in our thoughts in the days and weeks ahead.

Sincerely,

Gabriella Scarlatta
