Chancellor's message on the war in the Middle East (March 9, 2026)
Dear Colleagues and Students,
I know this may have been a difficult spring break, with the advent of the war in Iran and the spread of violence across much of the Middle East. The devastation has been very hard to witness, even from thousands of miles away. I recognize this is an especially painful and frightening situation for many of you from or with close ties to the region, as well as for our veterans and military-affiliated members of our community.
During times of turmoil and uncertainty, it is important to remember that UM-Dearborn is a safe and supportive community and that there are resources here for you. Students can find help through CAPS, the university’s counseling and psychological services. Faculty and staff can access services through the Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office. Additionally, international students seeking guidance on travel or support regarding recent federal immigration changes should reach out to our Office of International Affairs.
As we await what I hope will be a swift end to this conflict, I encourage everyone in our community to continue to look out for one another and to uphold, as we always do, our culture of care, understanding, and mutual respect.
Sincerely,
Gabriella Scarlatta
Interim Chancellor
