Earthquake Relief Efforts (February 13, 2023)
Dear Colleagues and Students,
The devastation caused by last week’s earthquake in Turkey and Syria is beyond comprehension; our shared humanity has been shattered. More than 35,000 people have lost their lives. The world remains hopeful, as each day incredible stories of life and survival are shared, but the impact of this natural disaster will be felt by families and friends around the world for decades.
Our campus community has a large number of faculty, staff, and students with ties to this part of the world and this is an especially difficult time for them. Many have expressed a desire to help relief efforts. The New York Times has published a compendium of various organizations accepting donations to assist in humanitarian relief and that you may consider as your circumstances permit. The organizations listed in the article are identified below.
United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF)
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
The Syrian American Medical Society
The Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations
Students who need assistance during this difficult emotional time can receive help through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Faculty and staff may seek support through the Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office (FASCCO).
The people of Turkey and Syria will forever be in our thoughts.
With deep and heartfelt sadness,
