Empathy Matters (October 2, 2024)

Dear UM-Dearborn Colleagues and Students,

While atrocities are occurring around the globe, from the civil war in Sudan to the persecution of Uyghurs in China and the continuing conflict in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East has had particular personal significance for many in our campus community.

As we approach the one-year anniversary of the onset of the most recent war in the Middle East, we are witnessing increased conflict in southern Lebanon and Yemen and, most recently, the direct involvement of Iran. This violence is in addition to the massive destruction in Gaza and the enduring trauma for Israelis as the result of the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7 of last year. 

The conflict shows no signs of resolution despite the ongoing calls from world leaders for the safe return of hostages and an end to the violence. Thousands worldwide and here at home are tirelessly advocating for this as well. This situation deeply affects many of our students, faculty, and staff, especially those with family, loved ones, and deep ties to the region. 

With so many on our campus experiencing pain, loss, fear, and uncertainty, the most recent escalation underscores the urgent need to come together and do all that we can to support one another. 

UM-Dearborn remains steadfast in our commitment to creating a peaceful and caring environment for everyone. We respect the worth and dignity of every person and pride ourselves on being a welcoming and compassionate community. Everyone has a unique story that collectively weaves the rich tapestry of our campus community. Please remember that the students in class, at lunch in the RUC, or just passing you on campus may be dealing with challenges and heartache far beyond coursework. Empathy matters.

I encourage anyone who needs support during this time to access our university’s resources. Students can find help through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the university’s counseling and psychological services. CAPS has already begun working with student organizations to discuss ways to provide additional student support. Students should also speak with their professors to discuss hardships at this time. Faculty and staff can access services through the Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office (FASCCO).
