Interim Provost Announcement (May 21, 2021)
Dear Colleagues,
Last week I announced that I would soon name an interim provost to begin on July 1. Today, I’m happy to announce that Gabriella Scarlatta has agreed to fill this important leadership position for our university. Her interim appointment will last one year beginning on July 1, pending regental approval.
Since 2014, Gabriella has served as Associate Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters and the Director of the French Studies Program.
Working with undergraduates and taking part in numerous university service activities, her long career at UM-Dearborn has been marked with distinction. Gabriella joined UM-Dearborn in 1996 and was promoted to professor of French, with tenure, in 2017. She has served as chair of the Department of Language, Culture, and Communication and co-chair of the Department of Humanities, has been a member of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters’ Executive and Curriculum Committees, and has served on the Faculty Senate. She served as a faculty representative on the Lecturers' Employee Organization university bargaining team in 2009, 2012 and 2017. Gabriella received the Women and Gender’s Studies Outstanding Research Award in 2004 and 2013 and was an honoree of the Council on Global Engagement from UM-Ann Arbor in 2012. She teaches French literature and culture and has published several books and scholarly articles about the French and Italian Renaissance and early women writers.
She received her B.A. and the Maîtrise in Modern Languages from the Université de Savoie, Chambéry, France. She earned her M.A. in French and Italian Literatures and her Ph.D. in Modern Languages from Wayne State University.
Gabriella will help guide and lead the academic fall return to campus plan maintaining the health and safety of faculty, students and staff as a top priority. She will also advance our strategic plan and work with the VP for Enrollment Management to finalize the strategic enrollment management plan.
Please help me welcome Gabriella to her new role.
