Statement regarding the Sri Lanka tragedy (April 22, 2019)

Dear Colleagues,

It is with deep sorrow that I must write to you once more about a senseless, horrific and brutal tragedy.  We at the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus join those grieving around the world, following the recent tragic events in Sri Lanka, a country that is rich in diverse cultures, ethnicities and religion. Nearly 300 innocent individuals lost their lives in attacks at churches and hotels, in what appears to be a terrorist act targeting Christians on Easter Sunday.

Sadly, this past Saturday, our nation also remembered the 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School shootings. Regardless of where they occur in the world, our collective humanity is diminished by these devastating acts of violence and terror.

We all must stand together against hate and violence. Make no mistake, ideologies driven by hatred, racism, bigotry, and racial, religious and ethnic supremacy, have no place on our campus, in our community or in society at large. We reject these malicious perspectives not only because they are offensive, but because they promote doctrine based on false premises and untruths.

Let us unite in assisting and supporting those who are grieving in our community.
