Statement regarding violence at U.S. Capitol

Today’s images and video of violence at the United States Capitol are disturbing and distressing. One of the most cherished hallmarks that defines our nation is the peaceful transition of power, but what we witnessed in Washington, D.C., was a shocking attempt to thwart this important aspect of our democratic process. As the leader of our university, I strongly condemn the insurrection to prevent Congress from validating last November’s election. This is a sad and regretful moment for our nation. We must put our political allegiances aside and come together as Americans in the spirit and defense of the democracy that is our legacy and defines our way of life.

I, like many Americans, oppose the violence we witnessed today and support President Schissel’s message.
