Texas Shooting Statement (May 25, 2022)

There is tremendous and unspeakable grief that comes from the death of children. It tears a hole in the fabric of our souls and society. Things will never return to the way they were for the families of the 19 children and two adults senselessly murdered in West Texas on Wednesday. These deaths can be prevented; our schools—from Oxford to Sandy Hook to Uvalde—must be safe places of learning without fear of violence.

My sadness from these events over the past is now outrage. We must eliminate assault weapons from our civil society and demand tighter gun controls and workable solutions from our elected officials and community leaders. To do anything less is to shrink from our responsibility and leave a precarious future for our children.
