U-M Presidential Transition (1/16/2022)
Dear Colleagues and Students,
I am writing about the decision, by the U-M Board of Regents, last evening to remove President Mark Schlissel following an investigation regarding an inappropriate relationship between him and a subordinate. We were all surprised, to say the least.
President Emerita Mary Sue Coleman will immediately serve as president while a search is conducted for a new university president. She is the right person to guide us at this time of turmoil and transition. Her understanding of our university will provide stability and continuity.
I expect our strategic and financial plans and areas of focus that include UM-Ann Arbor’s collaboration to continue. I have already reached out to President Coleman and hope to work closely with her to ensure we remain on the right course. I am asking the entire university community to be flexible and collaborative as we navigate these challenging waters.
These developments are deeply troubling for all of us and I appreciate your continued dedication to UM-Dearborn’s mission and values. We are a strong community and together we will continue our bright, promising, and exciting trajectory.
I encourage anyone who has experienced any form of sexual or gender misconduct to report them to the proper authorities. Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office (FASCCO) provides short-term counseling, personalized coaching, and educational presentations to staff, faculty, and their immediate family members. They can be reached by calling 734-936-8660. Students can receive free, confidential services from Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) or by calling 313-593-5430.
With all good wishes and optimism for our future,
Go Blue - Go Dearborn,
Domenico Grasso
Chancellor
