Biography and Education

Brian Dates, M.A. is a Lecturer I in the Master of Public Administration and Policy program and a consultant in statistics, research, and program evaluation.

Mr. Dates has served in a wide range of capacities, principally in the areas of mental health and nonprofit leadership. He was a practicing therapist for 40 years. He also administrated an outpatient psychiatric clinic. He was the Director of Evaluation and Research at the Continuum Center for Adult Counseling and Leadership Training at Oakland University, a center focused on programs for women returning to the workplace and one of the prototype women’s centers in the United States. As a non-profit administrator, he has served as both Director of Performance Improvement and Director of Evaluation and Research for a large multi-faceted non-profit organization. During this time, Mr. Dates consulted both to, and on behalf of, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration in the area of programs for persons who were homeless with co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders. One facet of this was his appointment as one of ten experts chosen to design SAMHSA’s evaluation of their portfolio of homeless programs. In addition to teaching in the MPAP program, Mr. Dates has also taught in the Human Resource Development program Oakland University, the Physician Assistant program at the University of Detroit-Mercy, and the School of Social Work at the University of Michigan.

Mr. Dates has been active in professional organizations including the American Psychological Association, the American Evaluation Association, and the Michigan Association for Evaluation. His tenure with the last organization included serving as President of the Board of Directors.
