Biography and Education

  • Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor
  • Ph.D. Microbiology and Immunology, University of Arizona College of Medicine
  • B.S. Microbiology and Chemistry, University of Arizona

Dr. Alteri joined the Natural Sciences faculty in 2018.  Prior to joining the faculty, he was a Research Faculty at the University of Michigan Medical School for 10 years.  Dr. Alteri maintains active collaborations with a number of labs at the medical school in Ann Arbor and has a long-standing commitment to undergraduate research in his laboratory.  His main area of expertise is bacterial pathogenesis and infectious diseases.  His laboratory focuses on understanding interbacterial competition between pathogens, specifically focusing on the specialized secretion system known as the Type VI secretion system.  The T6SS is a weapon deployed by bacteria to directly attack and kill competitors.  Another aspect of his research involves exploring host-microbe interactions with pathogenic E. coli.
