Dr. Brainer conducts research on queer and transgender family issues in Taiwan and in transnational contexts. She is writing a book based on her ethnographic research and interviews with LGBTQ people and with their heterosexual parents and siblings in 11 of Taiwan's 13 counties. A second project analyzes how queer and trans people navigate family-based immigration to the United States. At UM-Dearborn, Dr. Brainer is Coordinator of the LGBTQ Studies Certificate Program and faculty advisor to two student organizations, She's the First and Pride. She teaches Sexualities, Genders & Bodies (Wgst/Hum/Soc 366), LGBTQ Religious Experience (Wgst/Rels/Soc 388), and Family, Sexuality & Human Rights (Wgst/Anth/Soc 451) among other courses.
