Dr. Zhao earned her bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1985 from Nankai University, China; her master and doctorate degrees from Indiana University in 1989 and 1992, respectively. Her Ph.D. thesis was entitled “Convergence and Error Bound Analysis of a Finite Difference Scheme for the One-dimensional Navier-Stokes Equations of Compressible Flow".
She joined the University as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics in fall 1992, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1998, and later to Full Professor in 2004. From 2009-2013, she served as an Associate Dean of CASL; and in 2015, she became the Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Dr. Zhao's current research interests are in numerical PDEs, simulations and modeling.
