Dagmar Budikova approved by the Regents as the new Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters

I am very happy to announce that, at their June meeting, the University of Michigan’s Board of Regents approved Dr. Dagmar Budikova to serve a five-year term as Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters beginning July 1, 2023.

Dr. Budikova received her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science with honors from the University of Toronto in 1996. In 2001, she earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Geography from the University of Calgary.

She comes to the University of Michigan-Dearborn  from Illinois State University where she began her career as an Assistant Professor of Geography in 2000, was promoted to Associate Professor of Geography in 2006, and Professor of Geography in 2011.  She served as the Department Chair of Geography, Geology, and the Environment from 2015 to 2023.  She also served as the Associate Dean for Personnel, Budget and Planning in the College of Arts and Sciences from 2011 to 2015.

Dr. Budikova is an environmental geoscientist specializing in physical geography, climatology, and hydroclimatology.  Her work has focused on improving our understanding of natural climate variability and long-term climate change, linkages between recent Arctic cryospheric change and mid-latitude weather, and North American hydroclimatology.

In 2007, Dr. Budikova founded the Institute of Geospatial Analysis & Mapping (GEOMAP) and served as the Director until 2010.  GEOMAP was established to help facilitate and coordinate campus and community-wide research efforts in geospatial sciences, while offering unique learning and research opportunities for students.

Dr. Budikova brings with her extensive experience in vision-building and strategic planning at the department and college levels in complex interdisciplinary environments.  In collaboration with faculty, staff and university leadership, she has successfully led the development and implementation of many new initiatives in programmatic innovation expanding both research and learning opportunities in practice-based education.

We very much look forward to working with Dr. Budikova, please join me in welcoming her  to the University of Michigan-Dearborn!
