Cap and gown and cord order information

To purchase your bachelor or masters cap and gown please contact the bookstore at 313-593-5551 or by email at sm458@bncollege.com. The bookstore will take down your sizing and contact information and provide you with a purchase and pickup time for the next day.

To pick up your cap and gown please have a credit card or cash payment ready when you arrive. Please note, the bookstore cannot accept debit or checks for payment. Credit card or cash only. You will remain in your car and bookstore staff will collect your payment and deliver your purchase to your car with your receipt.

Due to unprecedented demand causing longer shipping times we can no longer guarantee delivery for cap and gowns ordered online.

Cap and gowns will be for curbside pickup only.

If you have already requested your cap and gown purchase with the bookstore, but have yet to purchase and pick up your items, please do so as soon as possible. Wait times at curbside could be much longer than usual the closer to commencement, so please stop by the bookstore today!

Individual tassels are available for purchase upon request.

If you are an honor cord recipient, please inform the bookstore staff so they can include your cords in your pickup order. You must be on the approved list of honor cord recipients from the Registrar’s office in order to be eligible to purchase honor cords.

All cap and gown pickup purchases should be made by April 16 at the latest. The last day to purchase and pickup your cap and gown from the bookstore will be Wednesday, April 28.

The bookstore curbside purchase and pickup for cap and gowns will run from 10am-6pm, Monday-Wednesday, April 26-28.

We will do our best to accommodate any student who waits until after the 28 to place or purchase/pickup a cap and gown request with us, but in order to avoid any conflicts with parking for commencement starting on April 29, we feel it would be best to make the 28 the last day for general purchase and pickup.

For all cap and gown related questions please contact us at 313-593-5551 or by email at sm458@bncollege.com.

Graduation Honors (Distinction and High Distinction)

Students in all UM-Dearborn undergraduate programs with a cumulative GPA of 3.6 and above, and graduate students with a cumulative GPA of 3.9 and above are designated as graduating “With High Distinction”.

Likewise, students in the programs listed above who have an undergraduate cumulative GPA between 3.2 and 3.59 or a graduate cumulative GPA between 3.7 and 3.89 are designated as graduating “With Distinction”.

Graduation distinctions are not calculated and granted for graduate programs in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters graduate programs affiliated with the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies.

Honors Cords

Degree candidates and prospective degree candidates who qualify Graduation Honors (Distinction and High Distinction) are invited to wear Honor Cords at the Commencement Ceremony.

If you qualify for Graduation Honors (based on current gpa), you are eligible to purchase an Honor Cord. Honor Cords will be available for purchase at the UM-Dearborn Barnes and Noble Bookstore.

All degree candidates who qualify for honor cords have been sent an email from the Registrar’s Office. If you have any questions about your eligibility, please contact the Registrar’s Office at 313-583-6500.

Live streaming

All ceremonies will be live streamed on Facebook, weather permitting. We cannot live stream in the event of moderate or heavy rain. Links to the live stream will be posted on the UM-Dearborn homepage.

Photographs

Guests will walk up to the stage with the student. The student will walk across the stage and guests are allowed to take photographs from ground level.

The graduate will then exit the stage for a professional photo. You will receive ordering information after your photo is taken.

If graduates and their guests want to take photos on campus, we ask that you move your vehicle(s) to Lot C (located on the north side of campus near the parking structure) so we may prepare the parking area and seating area for the next ceremony. If you are participating in the last or the only ceremony for the day, you may leave your vehicle in the lot if you take additional photos elsewhere on campus.

Due to COVID restrictions, we ask all guests to remain at least six feet apart while at the ceremony or elsewhere on campus. Face coverings must be worn at all times while on campus, with the exception when taking a photo.

Volunteer and faculty/staff participation information

If faculty and staff wish to assist during one or more of the ceremonies, please review the staffing information and sign up for the days that you are interested in working with this Google form. We need volunteers!

Or if you don’t have time to staff a whole ceremony, faculty or staff who wish to participate in a socially distanced “clap out” chain as the graduates and their guests leave the ceremony area, can email Kris Day at dayk@umich.com. Faculty and staff can select the ceremonies they wish to attend. For example, if departments want to coordinate a socially-distanced cheering section to celebrate their graduates, that would be great!

If you have any questions about the staffing opportunities, please email Kris Day at dayk@umich.edu.
