The graduate will then exit the stage for a professional photo. You will receive ordering information after your photo is taken.

If graduates and their guests want to take photos on campus, we ask that you move your vehicle(s) to Lot C (located on the north side of campus near the parking structure) so we may prepare the parking area and seating area for the next ceremony. If you are participating in the last or the only ceremony for the day, you may leave your vehicle in the lot if you take additional photos elsewhere on campus.

Due to COVID restrictions, we ask all guests to remain at least six feet apart while at the ceremony or elsewhere on campus. Face coverings must be worn at all times while on campus, with the exception when taking a photo.

Volunteer and faculty/staff participation information

If faculty and staff wish to assist during one or more of the ceremonies, please review the staffing information and sign up for the days that you are interested in working with this Google form. We need volunteers!

Or if you don’t have time to staff a whole ceremony, faculty or staff who wish to participate in a socially distanced “clap out” chain as the graduates and their guests leave the ceremony area, can email Kris Day at dayk@umich.com. Faculty and staff can select the ceremonies they wish to attend. For example, if departments want to coordinate a socially-distanced cheering section to celebrate their graduates, that would be great!

If you have any questions about the staffing opportunities, please email Kris Day at dayk@umich.edu.

If you have any questions about the ceremony, please email spring2021@umich.edu.

If you would like to postpone your graduation ceremony, please email umd-commencement@umich.edu.

Updated March 15, 2021

Information about commencement times and cap and gown ordering instructions will be shared by March 26.

There is still time to RSVP for the Class of 2020 and Class of 2021 ceremonies. Please use the appropriate links below.

CLASS of 2021

Although the COVID pandemic continues to create many uncertainties and restrictions regarding large gatherings we are happy to announce that spring commencement plans will include an in-person recognition of your accomplishments.

While we typically would gather at Crisler Center, in Ann Arbor, for the spring ceremony, COVID restrictions make such an event impossible this year. The commencement team held discussions with students, campus event planners, our emergency operations director and senior leadership and all agreed on the importance of holding an event to publicly recognize student accomplishments, allow guests to celebrate in person and provide some level of a traditional ceremony, if safety allows

Spring 2021 Commencement Ceremony information:

  • Ceremonies will be held on Saturday, May 1 and will continue through Tuesday, May 4 at UM-Dearborn inside the Fieldhouse.
  • Ceremonies will be grouped by college.
  • The exact time is still being determined, but we anticipate a start time around 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. We do not yet know what college will be assigned to a specific date.
  • Graduates will be limited to two guests, there are no exceptions.
  • There will be a brief ceremony with remarks and video recorded messages.
  • At the conclusion of the remarks, graduates will be directed to the stage where they will:
    • Hand an index card with the graduate's name to a reader.
    • Have their name read as they walk across the stage.
    • Exit the stage for a photo and pick up a diploma cover, program and alumni gift.
    • Exit the Fieldhouse with their guests.
  • The ceremony will be streamed live on Facebook.
  • There will be extra health and safety measures in place to protect all guests and staff.

Students meeting graduation requirements by the end of August 2021, are eligible to participate in the Spring 2021 ceremony.

The above plan is contingent on the latest COVID-19 health and government restrictions and may be moved virtual if necessary.

If you have any questions regarding the above information, please email spring2021@umich.edu.

For questions about graduation eligibility, please email umd-commencement@umich.edu.

CLASS of 2020

While the COVID pandemic continues to create many uncertainties and restrictions regarding large gatherings, we are happy to announce that the university would like to honor the Class of 2020, in person this spring.

Commencement plans for the Class of 2021 include a limited in-person ceremony at UM-Dearborn, scheduled for the first weekend of May. We anticipated being able to hold an in-person, large gathering at Crisler Center this spring, however this will not occur for the second year in a row. The health and safety of our community remains paramount.

As we plan our Class of 2021 events, we are also extending an invitation to the Class to 2020 to return to campus to receive their well-deserved public recognition. Please review the plan below and indicate your thoughts by taking a short survey if you will attend the event.

Class of 2020 Commencement Ceremony information:

  • Ceremonies will be held on Thursday and Friday, April 29 and 30 at UM-Dearborn inside the Fieldhouse.
  • The exact time is still being determined, but we anticipate a start time around 5 p.m., a second ceremony would take place around 7 p.m.
    • Exit the stage for a photo.
    • Exit the Fieldhouse with their guests.
  • The ceremony will be streamed live on Facebook.
  • There will be extra health and safety measures in place to protect all guests and staff.

The above plan is contingent on the latest COVID-19 health protocols and government restrictions.

If you have any questions regarding the above information, please email spring2021@umich.edu.
