Junior year is the perfect time to start looking ahead to life after high school. Use your summer to explore your interests, learn more about your options, and build habits that will help you feel prepared for junior year. If you aren’t sure where to start, consider the following:

⬜ Create a list of things you enjoy.

Hobbies are something everyone should have; they can even help you discover a future career path. For example, if you like making videos and writing, you could learn how to write a script or direct a movie. Creating a list can help you discover new interests as well!

⬜ Visit colleges.

Visiting a college campus may feel early, but starting sooner can actually make things easier later on. When you go on a campus tour, you will get a sense of the environment and can decide if it's the right fit for you. Plus, it can give you a glimpse into the next chapter of your life.

⬜ Think financially.

Take some time with your family to begin educating yourself about college costs and financial aid. Do some research on financial aid (FAFSA), where it comes from, and how you can apply for it. UM-Dearborn offers many types of financial aid, including scholarships.

⬜ Use resources to help find a college that fits you.

Your parents, school counselors, and teachers are all great resources for discovering colleges.  You can also research schools online—most universities have a section that describes their campus life. Asking thoughtful questions, not just about academics but about the school's environment, can also help you make informed decisions.

⬜ Don't overwhelm yourself.

Balance is a big part of life. You have to make time to have fun while also staying productive, because your well-being is the most important. Taking care of both your physical and mental health helps you stay focused and recharge when needed.

⬜ Make the most of your summer!

College prep is more than just researching universities. Here are some unconventional options that will make your summer fun and memorable.

  • Make a 10th-grade photo album
