Winter 2022 Orientation and Placement Exams

IMPORTANT: You must pay your enrollment deposit in order to have access to be able complete your New Student Resource Course and Register for Placement Exam and Orientation Advising Appointment.

Steps are as follows:

Create Your Uniqname

Your uniqname is your UM-Dearborn identity which grants you access to your Umich email account and other online services. You must have both the UMID and uniqname to sign up for placement exams and orientation, and register for classes. After you have created your uniqname, please allow two business days for it to be added to our system. If you received your UMID and haven't setup your uniqname, you can obtain your uniqname now at the ITS website.

New Student Resource Course

All new degree seeking students must complete the New Student Resource Course. Completed in our student learning system (Canvas), you will work through a series of informative quizzes and modules covering important information about UM-Dearborn resources, and your academic college, to help you be successful. You complete this course on your own time and pace. Students log into this Canvas course using their uniqname and password.

Upon successfully completing this course, you will then be allowed to register for a Orientation Advising Appointment and provided instructions on how to schedule this appointment.

Placement Exams
Mathematics Placement Exam
  • To ensure students are placed into the appropriate course, an incoming transfer student may be required to take the placement exam. However, some students may waive this exam based upon specific college requirements. Please view the Placement Exam website to review the math placement requirements as this varies based on college and major, and to register for your placement exam. This computer-based exam (Accuplacer) is taken remotely through a digital proctoring service (Examity). The exam has no time limit, although most students finish within two hours. When registering, you chose a date range of one-week in which you will complete the exam. Upon selecting your placement exam date range, you will be provided more instructions of how to complete the exam.
Foreign Language Placement Exam
  • The Foreign Language placement exam is strongly recommended for students with less than three years prior experience in a language who plan to continue taking courses in that same language at UM-Dearborn. Placement exams are offered for French, German, Spanish, and Arabic. If you choose to take a foreign language placement exam, you will receive more instructions of how to complete the exam upon registration.

Please view the Placement Exam Website for additional details related to the exam process, requirements, and to register.

Orientation Advising Appointment

This orientation advising appointment is when you will meet with your Academic Advisor to review program requirements and register for your courses. Students must attend an orientation advising appointment in order to have registration access granted for courses. As a reminder, students must have completed their New Student Resource Course in order to have access to register for an appointment, and instructions are provided once you have completed the course.
