Through emphasis on scholarship, diverse educational experiences and effective instructional and leadership practice, the College of Education, Health, and Human Services promotes the preparation and continuing development of exemplary teachers, administrators, and health and human service practitioners and leaders. The college currently serves about 1,300 students; 75 percent are pursuing undergraduate programs and 25 percent are seeking graduate degrees.
Reflecting an ethic of caring and commitment, CEHHS seeks to accommodate the complex schedules and priorities of a diverse student body whose members balance work, family and school commitments. Courses are available year-round, in the evening, and often in online contexts.
CEHHS offers a large and growing list of academic programs.
In the Department of Education, there are multiple options for initial teacher certification by the state of Michigan, with graduate programs providing opportunities for current teachers seeking to refine and expand their skills and to augment their credentials. In addition, we offer administrative preparation for educators interested in moving into leadership positions in the schools. Through its doctoral program, the college offers three distinct emphases all responding to selected applicants' interest in applying research to real-world community challenges. The Department of Education also offers academic programs in instructional technology and children and families for students who are not seeking employment in K-12 school systems. Recently, new certificate programs have been included for those interested in STEM2 (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine) and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).
In the areas of health and human services, the college has deployed its resources and expertise in service to the metropolitan community through its development of curriculum and programming relevant to the needs and circumstances of southeast Michigan. Beginning with its first approved bachelor’s degree program in Community Health Education, designed to prepare professionals to promote health and wellness in community and organizational settings, the college has added bachelor’s curricula in Public Health to prepare students to enter the workforce directly in either clinical or administrative settings in environmental health, disease prevention or epidemiology; in Health Policy Studies, which fosters an interdisciplinary approach to health and healthcare for students interested in health services administration, finance, IT analysis and human resources; and in health and human services which produces professionals who work in emergency departments, intensive care units and special needs camps to reduce the negative impacts of stressful or traumatic life events for children and their families. The college also supports a minor program in Social Work, a certificate in Addiction Studies, and a master’s degree in Health Information Technology that includes course work in the university’s College of Business to train students for mid-level positions in hospital IT departments, healthcare clinic medical records departments, as well as government health agencies like the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
The members of CEHHS' full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty all hold terminal degrees from reputable institutions in the United States and other nations. All are well prepared, committed to and actively engaged in applied research in support of the development of the region's citizens, workplaces, and social institutions. The full-time faculty is augmented by a capable adjunct faculty, members of which are hired based upon their unique qualifications and their professional experience.

In addition, staff collaborate with faculty for an exceptional educational atmosphere. The faculty and staff are supported by remarkable UM-Dearborn students, who both give and gain valuable insights to and from the CEHHS team.
