Get Extensive Secondary Teaching Experience
We strongly believe that teaching is a craft perfected with practice, and you’ll get plenty of it at UM-Dearborn in our Bachelor of Arts in secondary education program. It includes early field work in secondary classrooms, two semesters of part-time teaching during apprenticeships, and a full semester of student teaching. When you graduate, you’ll be an experienced teacher ready to confidently walk into your own secondary classroom for the first time.
The program prepares you to be a dynamic and effective middle school or high school educator in a subject of your choice: English language arts, math, integrated science, or social studies. When you complete the program and pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification exam, we’ll recommend you for teacher certification to the Michigan Department of Education.
Where A Secondary Education Degree Will Take You
Your degree will prepare you to teach the subject of your choice at the secondary level you choose. From there, you can get more education to teach other subjects or within other grade levels. Your degree also helps prepare you to move beyond the classroom into roles such as instructional coordinator, or, with additional training, counselor, principal, or others.
