What UM-Dearborn Costs
Learn what expenses make up a budget in financial aid
The cost of attendance or budget in a financial aid award is made up of five expenses:
Tuition and fees are based on full-time enrollment, defined as 12 or more credit hours per term for undergraduate students. Those electing fewer than 12 credit hours are charged on a per-credit-hour basis. For financial aid eligibility, full-time for graduate students is defined as 8 credit hours per term. Current tuition and fees for all UM-Dearborn Schools and Colleges are available from the Office of the Registrar.
Costs of books vary by program, course load, and selected classes. Book cost can be reduced by comparing prices, buying used books, renting books or using the university's library.
Current books budget is $1,300 per academic year.
- Are you planning on living off campus? The financial aid budget allows for off-campus rent and food costs based on average costs . Your costs will depend on housing arrangements and lifestyle, so carefully evaluate your options. If you live off-campus, you pay your rent directly to a landlord. Plan accordingly, since you will have four months’ rent to pay for the semester. If you live off-campus, you may save money by having roommates. The allowance for off-campus living is $9,048 per academic year (two semesters Fall and Winter.)
- Commuting from home. Students who commute will reduce room and board costs significantly. The allowance for commuting students is $2226 for the academic year to acknowledge ongoing family expenses and should not be considered to be a single bill that is paid directly to a landlord.
Current transportation budget is $1,876 per academic year. This allowance is based on the average distance a student may travel to and from campus each week by using the U.S. Mileage Allowance.
This category includes other student expenses such cell phone bills, clothes, personal hygiene, student insurance and entertainment. This is the most variable part of a student's budget. The financial aid budget allows about $1,400 per academic year. Set an allowance, track expenses and stick to your budget of about $46 per week.
