Discover Music History and Theory

Enhance your understanding and enjoyment of music with a minor or integrative studies concentration in music at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

The program, which requires 17-18 credits, starts with two introductory courses. You then choose 11-12 credits of upper-level courses in music history (MHIS) or music theory (MTHY). Your choices include courses about music before Bach, music from Bach to Brahms, music since 1900, popular music in the United States, gospel music, the music of Detroit, women musicians, symphonies, opera, west African music, multimedia and music, and issues in selected areas of music theory, among other subjects.

Students will:

  • Demonstrate ability to identify central genres of the major historical periods and/or cultural areas of music.
  • Demonstrate ability to identify central stylistic and aesthetic hallmarks of major historical periods and/or cultural areas of music.
  • Demonstrate ability to identify aurally various genres and styles associated with particular historical periods and/or cultural areas. 
  • Demonstrate ability to write effectively about music, correctly applying all pertinent musical terminology. 
  • Demonstrate understanding of music in relation to the key social, cultural, political, economic, philosophical, and aesthetic forces that helped shape it.
