Graduate Application Status
Monitor your status online for current updates
You can monitor your graduate application status anytime through the UM-Dearborn Admissions Portal. After submitting your application, please wait for a confirmation email indicating your application has been processed before checking the portal for updates. Understanding the steps, timeframes, and tips below will help you track your progress with confidence.
Be mindful of your program’s deadline. Programs with hard deadlines require all materials to be submitted by the specified date. Programs with rolling admissions may consider applications and materials received after the recommended deadline, up to the posted final submission date. If you are unsure whether your program has a hard or rolling deadline, contact the Office of Graduate Studies for clarification.
For questions about the admissions process or your application status, email or call the Office of Graduate Studies. Allow 1-2 business days for a response. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.
Using UM-Dearborn's Admissions Portal
Logging In and Accessing Your Application
To access your application:
- Visit the Admissions Portal
- Log in with your username (the email used for applying), and password, and select "Sign In"
- Choose the right application; If you have multiple applications, check the term and Application ID to select the correct one
Trouble Logging In?
- Use the "Forgot Password" feature if you experience login issues. Before admission, password-related emails are sent to your application email; after admission, they go to your umich email account. Current students receive portal password resets to their umich email.
- If you are a former UM-Dearborn student or your account is disabled, contact the UM-Dearborn ITS Helpdesk to reactivate your admissions portal access.
- For other issues, email [email protected].
Using Your Checklist
If you log in to check your status and notice your application shows 99% complete, it hasn't been submitted yet. Once your application has been submitted, a generated checklist helps you track submission of supplemental materials and updates.
- A "100% Complete" indicates that your Online Application has been submitted, but there may still be outstanding items. Please use the Checklist to see what's needed to complete your admissions file.
- Uploaded documents may not immediately appear as complete, as manual review is required.
- Reference the "How to Apply" instructions for how to submit any outstanding items.
- Utilize your personalized upload URL, received via email after your submitted Online Application has been processed, to submit additional documents. If you have trouble locating this link, please connect with us at [email protected] and it can be resent.
For application changes or updates, email the Office of Graduate Studies for assistance. There is often no need to start a new application.
Your admission decision will be posted in your portal as it is processed, with an email notification the following day.
After submitting your Online Application, allow time for processing and individual checklist updates. You will receive a confirmation email the day after submission with next steps.
Items processed after your application may include:
- Transcripts uploaded in the Online Application
- Materials submitted separately before application submission
- Verification of TRF (IELTS) and Appointment Number (TOEFL) information
Applications are generally processed within 5 business days (Monday-Friday). Processing times may be longer during high-volume periods, such as deadlines or campus breaks. If your checklist does not update within 10 business days after submission, contact Graduate Studies for troubleshooting.
Most supplemental documents (transcripts, test scores, resumes, etc.) are processed within 3-5 business days (Monday-Friday) after receipt. High-volume periods may extend processing time.
Different document types may update at different times, even if submitted on the same day.
- Documents sent by mail are collected on Wednesdays. Consider electronic submission to expedite processing.
- Items submitted separately before your application are held until your application is submitted. Contact Graduate Studies to update your checklist once your application is submitted.
- Official test scores are received electronically and require standard processing time before portal updates.
Non-U.S. transcripts require evaluation to confirm accreditation, degree equivalency, and grade conversion to a 4.0 scale. You have two options:
Option 1: Submit a course-by-course evaluation from a preferred NACES member (use our recommended vendors for possible discounts). This expedites review and supports your future academic or professional pursuits. If admitted and enrolled, UM-Dearborn will reimburse up to $200 of your evaluation cost, applied to your first term’s bill after the add/drop period.
- Educational Credential Evaluators (10% off discounted rate when using custom UM-Dearborn link)
- International Education Evaluators (discounted rate of $145 when using custom UM-Dearborn link)
- The Evaluation Company (formerly SpanTran) - Course Analysis type (10% off discounted rate when using custom UM-Dearborn link)
- Educational Perspectives
- World Education Services - Course-by-Course ICAP type
- Course-by-course evaluations from other NACES members may be utilized on a case-by-case basis.
Each organization has their own documentation requirements, costs, and turnaround times for completion.
Option 2: If you do not submit a third-party evaluation, you can request an internal evaluation in your online application or separately in an email after your application has been submitted. Results are not shared with applicants.
This process begins after all required materials are received and generally adds 2-4 weeks to your admissions timeline during rolling admissions. High-volume periods may cause further delay. For hard deadline programs, internal evaluations are completed to meet review deadlines. If you need an expedited decision, a third-party evaluation is recommended.
Applications are reviewed only after all required supplemental materials are received and processed.
Degree-Seeking Programs (Master’s, Specialist, Doctoral) and Graduate Certificates: Complete files for rolling admission are reviewed within 2-3 weeks. Files with internal transcript evaluations require additional time until that process is complete. Admission decisions are posted in your portal and sent via email.
Hard Deadline Programs: Applications are routed for review after the posted hard deadline. Decisions are released after committee review, which may take several weeks. Doctoral program decisions typically require up to 2 months after the deadline.
NCFD/Guest Applicants: Admitted on a space-available basis. Review begins one month before classes start. Delays may occur based on course enrollment. Contact Graduate Studies for expected timelines if needed.
All applicants applying to a fully online program must complete a supplemental Online Student Disclosures and Certifications form that will appear in your UM-Dearborn applicant portal after application submission alongside your application checklist. This covers important Distance Education Student Information and Procedures and Export Control Regulations our campus must follow. If the supplemental form is not submitted prior to receiving an admission decision, a hold will be placed on your student account until the certifications have been completed.
If you are admitted pending final, official documents, you are required to submit outstanding materials by the end of your first term. Summer admits follow the Fall term’s timeline.
About three weeks after the term begins, registration holds will be placed on accounts with missing conditional documents, such as official transcripts or proof of degree conferral (provisional or completion certificates are not sufficient). These holds prevent future course registration.
Processing time for received documents is 3-5 business days (Monday-Friday). High-volume periods may extend this timeline. Once processed, your portal will be updated and holds released. You must resolve all holds or have an approved extension before enrolling in the next term.
Certain international records that are difficult to submit electronically or by mail can be submitted as “true copies” at One Stop Student Services. These documents will be scanned and sent to Graduate Studies for processing.
Recommended Deadlines to Resolve Holds
- Summer and Fall admits: October 15
- Winter admits: March 15
Extensions
If you need an extension, request it after the hold is placed (about three weeks after the semester starts). Substantial extensions may require supporting documentation from your prior institution. Submit extension requests by the recommended deadline, as review generally takes 3-5 business days.
If your extension is approved, make sure you submit all required documents by your new deadline. Missing the extended deadline may lead to administrative withdrawal.
If your portal shows an outstanding item you have already submitted and it is past the expected processing time, email Graduate Studies with the relevant information below:
- Application ID
- Name on your application and document/test score
- Date submitted or expected receipt date
- Method of delivery (e.g., Parchment, mail, institution code 1861)
- Where it was sent (address, email, account)
- IELTS TRF number or TOEFL Appointment number (if relevant)
- Screenshot of delivery confirmation, if available
Materials sent directly to academic units or undergraduate admissions must be transferred to Graduate Studies for processing.
