Symptom/Illness Reference

Please adhere to this chart to determine if your child is healthy enough for school. This symptoms and illness chart has been created using the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and Center for Disease Control guidelines as well as the ECEC Fall Policies and Procedures plan.

Please notify the front desk 313-593-5424 if your child is not attending for the day with the specific symptoms you have noticed. You can also update your child's teacher if new symptoms develop.

If your child has ONE of these symptoms they cannot come to school that day:

  • Fever of 100.4 or higher
  • New Cough
  • New shortness of breath

If your child has ONLY a fever or ONLY a new cough (not both) you must wait 24 hours without fever reducing medication or until the cough diminishes.

If your child has TWO or more symptoms listed below, they must stay home for 5 days from the onset symptoms and can return on day 6 as long as symptoms have diminished OR may return sooner with a negative PCR test and no symptoms. The child must remain fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication before returning to school.

  • Fever of 100.4 or higher
  • New Cough
  • New shortness of breath
  • Chills

If you take your child to the pediatrician for a COVID test because of symptoms, they may return to school sooner than the 5 days as long as they meet the following criteria:

It is your responsibility to let the school know of each symptom, not just in the chart above, but if out sick for any reason.
