General FAQs

CEHHS advisors will be listed under your Success Team, and you can view their appointment availability there.

Am I allowed to take more than 18 credits (undergraduate) or 12 credits (graduate) in one semester?
- You will need to submit a petition to be allowed to take more than the maximum allowed credits in one semester. The petition type will be “Exceed maximum hours allowed.” Please note that all petitions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the CEHHS Professional Standards Committee (PSC).
How do I change my major/degree/concentration?
- Undergraduate students must complete the Change of Degree/Concentration Form (Undergraduate).
- Graduate students must complete the Change of Degree/Concentration Form (Graduate).
How do I contact my advisor with any questions?
- If you would like to speak with an academic advisor, please schedule an appointment using one of the options above. Additionally, you can also email [email protected] for help with quick questions or concerns.
I am a pre-health track student looking to go on to a professional school (i.e. Medical School, PA Program, Dental School, etc.), what undergraduate programs are offered at the College of Education, Health, and Human Services for this pathway?
- Our most popular major for pre-health track students at CEHHS is Health and Human Services (HHS). This major focuses on preparing students to identify and meet the needs of vulnerable individuals, families, and communities.
- Students in the HHS major are required to choose one concentration (Pre-Health Professions, Public Health, or Human Services).
- In addition to the major, students can take pre-requisite courses for their pre-health track and have the option to receive specialized advising from Health Professions Advising.
What are the maximum credit hours a graduate student can take each semester?
- The course/credit load for all graduate students is a maximum of 12 credits in a 15 week semester, or 8 credits in a 7 week semester. This maximum can be raised via a successful petition. More information:
Can I transfer courses from a previous graduate program.
- Only courses that have not been used toward earning a previous degree can be considered for transfer to any CEHHS graduate program. If you previously earned a Master’s, Specialist, or Doctorate using the courses in question, you cannot use them toward a degree at UM-Dearborn. In the case of courses with duplicate or similar content, a new course will be agreed upon with the advisor (and approval via petition) to assist in reaching the total credits necessary for graduation.
- If the course(s) were part of an unfinished program, they can be reviewed and considered for transfer of up to 9 hours toward a master’s program if they meet all criteria outlined in the Transfer Credit Policy.
Registration FAQs

- To drop your course online, you will need to go to your Student Portal

Some issues can be solved by taking the right steps:
- Corequisite:
- Corequisite courses are ones that must be taken together. In order to register for a corequisite course, make sure all courses are added to the summary before pressing submit.
- Time Conflict:
- These errors occur when two courses overlap. In order to register for both classes, you must submit approval from both instructors through the Registration Override Request form.
If your error is not listed above, please refer to the Registration and Overrides definitions list to understand what the issue may be. If you are unable to resolve the issue on your own, please complete the Registration Override Request form.
To add to a class waitlist online you will need to go to the Register for Classes page through your Student Portal. Once you're on the "Register for Classes" page, add the class and you will go to the "Summary" section where all your registered classes are listed. You will click on the "Action" drop down menu for the class and select "Waitlist" and submit your changes. When you do that, you should be added to the waitlist.
CEHHS policy states that students are added to a class in the order in which they are on the waitlist, and students cannot “skip” over other students on the waitlist. You can get off of a waitlist for a class as other students drop the class or remove themselves from the waitlist.
You can find all deadlines for registration through the Registration Timetable.
Field Experience FAQs
Internship and field experience opportunities depend on your program and plan of study. Some programs include a required internship, which is arranged through the College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS). Other programs may offer optional internships that students can pursue as part of their academic experience. If an internship is part of your program, CEHHS will help coordinate the placement.
Internships are arranged through the College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS) in alignment with university policy and accreditation requirements. Students are welcome to share their preferences or submit a request for a specific site; however, placement at that site is not guaranteed. The Field Placement Team makes the final decision and will do their best to accommodate requests when possible.
The College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS) does not provide transportation, and students are expected to arrange their own travel to and from their placement site. Students are welcome to coordinate carpools with classmates and are encouraged to share any transportation concerns with the Field Placement Team. When possible, we try to place a cohort of students at the same site to help make coordination easier.
Students are placed in the content area(s) they are seeking certification in. If you are pursuing multiple endorsements, you will likely be placed in those areas. Placement decisions depend on your specific program and any requirements set by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).
Outside certifications may not meet the requirements set by the College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS). To ensure compliance, students should complete the training approved by the college, as outlined in the required clearances for your program.
Teacher Certification FAQs
The Michigan Tests for Teacher Certification (MTTC) can be taken at any time, however, individuals are encouraged to wait until they have been accepted for student teaching before registering to take the examinations. This will increase the likelihood of passing an MTTC the first time.
There is no restriction on how many times a teacher candidate can register for and take the Michigan Tests for Teacher Certification (MTTC). However, candidates are restricted to one unique test attempt every thirty (30) days. The Pearson platform will not allow an individual to take them more frequently.
When registering to take an MTTC, an individual is asked with whom the official scores should be shared. Test takers must list the University of Michigan-Dearborn as a recipient of their official scores. This is included in the cost of the examination. If UM-Dearborn is not listed as a recipient, the institution will not receive your official scores. UM-Dearborn cannot accept test results sent directly from the test taker. Official results must come directly from Pearson. Individuals who do not list UM-Dearborn will need to pay an additional fee later to Pearson to have the official results sent.
Students should exercise great caution when registering to take their MTTCs. Each test has been created in alignment with the requirements of specific teacher certification concentrations and grade bands. If you take an incorrect MTTC, it is likely that it may not be counted toward your requirements. If in doubt, please contact your CEHHS academic advisor who can provide you with the specific names and test numbers of MTTCs required by your academic program.
Generally speaking, “financial aid” is not available for the cost of taking MTTCs. For the past several years, Pearson (the testing company) has made grants available to test takers who are registered to take specific MTTCs for the first time. Individuals must register, pay and take their MTTC after which time, Pearson will send an email to test takers, asking them if they wish to apply for 100% reimbursement. A reimbursement grant is not available when taking an MTTC more than once.
Pearson provides an assortment of suggestions on their website. Please visit Michigan Tests for Teacher Certification (MTTC) and then select “Prepare” from the top banner. You may also reach out to [email protected] to inquire about additional preparatory options.
