Everything you and your guests need to know for attending and celebrating Commencement.

This year's spring commencement will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2020, at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor. Crisler Center doors open at noon for guests.

Arrival

  • Doors open 90 minutes (at 12:00 noon) before the Commencement ceremony.
  • Graduates will be directed to check-in upon arrival. From there, UM-Dearborn staff will assist with the line-up to prepare for the processional.
  • All family members and guests attending Commencement, including children over the age of two, need a ticket to attend. No admissions without a ticket.  
  • General seating is available on a first come, first-serve basis.
    • Wheelchair accessible and limited mobility seating are also available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • All guests should be seated ½ hour before the start of the ceremony. 
  • Each ceremony is expected to last approximately 90 minutes.
  • The ceremony is expected to last two hours and 30 minutes.

Accessibility and ADA Accommodations

We strive to ensure that all graduates and guests can participate fully in this program. On the day of Commencement, UM-Dearborn staff will be available to assist anyone with disabilities.

Sign Language Interpretation

An American Sign Language interpreter will be present on stage for the duration of the ceremony.

Accessibility for Graduates

  • If you are a degree candidate with disabilities who plans to participate in the ceremony and require assistance, please call the Commencement Coordinator at 313-593-4753 to make arrangements.
  • If you use a wheelchair, you will be able to access the stage for recognition.

Accessibility for Guests

Wheelchair and limited mobility seating is available. A limited number of wheelchairs will be available to use during the ceremony. UM-Dearborn staff will be available to assist guests who require a wheelchair.

Flowers

Flowers will be available for purchase, from Commencement Flowers, the day of the ceremony. In addition, Commencement Flowers provides guests with the opportunity to pre-order flowers directly from their website for pick-up at the ceremony. Please visit their website for additional information. Photography

Photographs of all participating candidates will be taken by Graduation Images during the program. Degree candidates will also have the option to have a portrait taken. Participants will receive a free proof and can order additional photographs.

Safety

To ensure a safe, comfortable environment and enjoyable Commencement, the following items are prohibited:

  • Oversized bags (anything that cannot fit comfortably under your seat)
  • Containers of any kind (including coolers, thermoses, cups, bottles, cans, flasks)
  • Aerosol and Spray Cans
  • Animals (except service animals for persons with a disability)
  • Flags with Flagpoles
  • Food of any kind
  • Alcoholic Beverages
  • Apparel or signage displaying profane or abusive language
  • Cameras with a lens longer than 6 inches
  • Noisemakers (including but not limited to whistles, air horns, boom boxes, bull horns, kazoos, sirens, thunder sticks, vuvuzelas, etc.)
  • Strollers
  • Video Camera, tripods, and selfie sticks
  • Weapons

The University of Michigan reserves the right to prohibit the carrying of any other item into the arena. Decisions on which items to prohibit will be made contingent upon security briefings by law enforcement agencies. Exceptions for medical or personal care reasons (e.g., diapers for a baby, medical prescriptions, etc.) will be addressed individually at the gates. The University of Michigan reserves the right to search or inspect such items and persons carrying them are encouraged to carry them into the arena in a clear plastic bag.

After the Ceremony

Diplomas

Diplomas for graduation will be mailed to your permanent address or the address listed on the Degree/Diploma Application approximately eight weeks after graduation.

Inclement Weather

The UM-Dearborn webpage will be updated to announce the cancellation of commencement ceremonies due to inclement weather. Additionally, the UM-Dearborn Emergency Alert System will be activated so that registered users will receive a text message and/or voicemail. If you have not registered to receive UM-Dearborn Emergency Alerts, you can register via UM-Dearborn Connect (select Secured Area and Personal Information).
