Birding By Ear and Beyond

Program descripion

The Birding by Ear and Beyond program at the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Environmental Interpretive Center (EIC) reimagines bird watching as an auditory experience. Led by alumna Donna Posont—a blind Environmental Studies graduate and one of the nation’s few blind Certified Interpretive Guides—the program teaches blind and visually impaired students to identify Michigan species like the American robin and blue jay through recordings and environmental clues. These activities foster a deep sense of wonder while educating participants on bird biology, migration, and nesting habits.

Meeting schedule

Beyond the classroom, the group explores nature through monthly Saturday morning meetings and statewide field trips, including "Owl Prowls" and the Great Backyard Bird Count. These sessions are also open to sighted friends and family, who often report a heightened awareness of their surroundings after learning to identify birds without relying on vision. The program’s innovative approach to sensory nature interpretation has earned it national recognition, including a profile on CBS Evening News. Donna was the 2024 recipient of the Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award, and that same year was also featured in Audubon Magazine's Fall issue.
