Student Employment Q&A
On-campus employment opportunities are a great way to develop your skills and gain useful experience. Positions might be in offices that support students, the library, helping faculty with research or supporting campus buildings and events, just to name a few. These positions are part-time and provide you the opportunity to gain many transferable skills for future internship and employment opportunities.
To apply, visit careers.umich.edu. In the Job Search box, choose: Work Location: Dearborn; Full/Part-Time: Part-Time; Regular/Temporary: Temporary.
Available through FAFSA, federal work-study is a financial aid program for students who have financial need. The student employee is paid as agreed with the employer, but a percentage of the wages are paid through federal funds, with the remainder paid by the student's employer. This benefits the student who earns money to help pay educational expenses as well as the employer who is reimbursed for a portion of the expense. Since this makes it more affordable for an on-campus employer to hire you, this opens up more opportunities for you which you will see when you search for positions at careers.umich.edu.
Work-study can be used for on-campus jobs as well some off-campus employment in non-profit agencies. If you are interested in this type of work, please contact Mai Qazzaz at [email protected] for more information. For more information on eligibility, visit the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships.
As an international student you are eligible to work on campus. Visit careers.umich.edu and in the Job Search box, make these selections:
Work Location: Dearborn
Full/Part-Time: Part-Time
Regular/Temporary: Temporary.
Note: there may be some positions that require work-study, which is a form of financial aid for students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents only. Be sure to inform the Office of International Affairs that you have obtained a position on campus!
Depending on how far along you are in your studies, you may consider applying for a co-op or internship. These are often paid opportunities in which you will acquire experience in your specific area of study while also gaining academic credit (note, internships that are not for academic credit are also available).
Each UM-Dearborn college has different requirements, so check out the Internships, Co-ops and Careers page to connect with someone in your college.
To explore off-campus opportunities for internships or full- or part-time employment, visit Career Connections. This job board is full of organizations that are specifically recruiting UM-Dearborn students, and it's updated daily. Check it out!
Internships are excellent opportunities to explore potential careers, make professional connections in your field, and gain relevant work experience to add to your resume. As an intern, you'll develop "soft skills" like communication, team work, and the ability to work with diverse groups of people while becoming more marketable to future employers. In some cases, there is the possibility of transitioning to a full-time permanent position upon completion of your internship.
Of course the exact skills will depend on what and where your position is, but no matter the position, if you reflect on what you're learning and make the most of the opportunity, you'll gain "transferable skills." These are skills that are useful in many environments and situations. Some examples include:
- Development and practice of soft skills such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving
- Demonstration of personal responsibility and leadership
- Understanding of campus/organizational resources and how/when to use them
- Exposure to and engagement with different environments, cultures, and people
- Acquisition of career knowledge and workplace skills

To find an updated list of career related books and ebooks available at the Mardigian Library, please check out this Career Resource Guide!
Begin at the library’s homepage and follow the instructions below:
To find: | Do This: | Example: |
---|---|---|
Print and e-books |
| "jobs for language majors" |
Career databases |
| Click on the “Healthcare” link in the left navigation bar, for example, to find job duties, required education and training, pay, and outlook for this occupation. |
Career databases, cont. |
| Click on the “Career Guide” link that matches the scope of your job interest: Country, Global City, or U.S. City. For example, I would click on “U.S. City Career Guides” then “New York” to find top companies, employment and industry trends, cost of living, job openings, and more in that city. |
Practice tests |
| You will need to create an account within this resource to take practice tests. Careers such as legal, nursing, allied health, civil service, law enforcement, military, and teaching are represented here. For example, I would click on “Health Occupations Practice Entrance Test” to access and take practice tests (50 questions each) on biology, chemistry, general science, math ability, reading comprehension, and verbal ability. |
Market research databases |
| Type the name of the industry in the search box. For example, the search phrase “web design” leads me to a report on “Web Design Services”. I learn that employment growth is declining and the number of new businesses has leveled off. You can search over 500 industries worldwide. |
Market research databases, cont. |
| Find leading companies and market overview for over 3,000 industries. For example, if I type the search phrase “fashion design’ and narrow my search to North America, I uncover the “United States-Apparel Retail” report. |
Company databases |
| Are you heading into an interview and would like to know more about the interviewing company so you can really shine? For example, if you have an interview with DTE Energy, use the company name as a search term and find out all locations in Michigan, information on when the company was started, what awards the company has just received, or other recent news. |
Company databases, cont. |
| Type your company name in the search box to locate a company profile that covers sales, number of employees, history of the company, brands, and key executives. For example, I found a company profile on Shinola. |
