Orientation
Orientation is designed to guide you through your transition to UM-Dearborn. You’ll learn about the services and resources available to acclimate you to the campus community and help you succeed in your journey to earning the Michigan degree. To help ensure your success, completion of all steps in the process is required prior to registering for classes.
First-Year and Transfer Orientation
Orientation provides you with pertinent information to prepare you for the upcoming semester. The following steps must be completed in order for you to meet with an academic advisor and register for classes.

For Students Starting in Fall 2026:
The following are required steps in the orientation process for students starting in Fall 2026 (Fall semester classes begin on Wednesday, August 26).
Beginning in early March, upon submitting your enrollment deposit and creating your uniqname, you will have access to your Orientation Portal which provides a personalized step-by-step checklist of your orientation steps.
Upon admission to the University of Michigan-Dearborn, you are required to submit a $50 Enrollment Deposit. This deposit signals your intent to enroll, reserves your space for the semester, and will be credited to your student account and applied toward your tuition. Enrollment deposits are non-refundable.
- UMID: Your 8-Digit University of Michigan ID Number
- Uniqname: Your personal University of Michigan identifier and the basis for all login access, and is part of your email address ([email protected])
- When you were admitted, you should have received an email from [email protected] with instructions on setting up your uniqname and umich.edu email account. This email also included your UMID. You must have both the UMID and uniqname to sign up for orientation, and register for classes. After you have created your uniqname, please allow two business days for it to be added to our system. If you received your UMID and haven't set up your uniqname, you can obtain your uniqname now at the ITS website.
- The Math Placement Exam is an essential part of the orientation process and ensures proper placement into academic classes. Most incoming students are required to take the placement exam, unless students have the requirement waived based on the student’s declared major, combined with their transferable credit.
- If required, upon submitting the enrollment deposit, you will be sent instructions to your UMICH email on how to complete your math placement exam. You also will find the link to complete the exam in your orientation portal. You must complete the placement exam before you can move on in the orientation process. Prior to having access to schedule the Orientation Academic Advising and Registration Appointment, education majors in the College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS) are required to complete the following clearances:
Criminal Background Check Consent Form
In order for a background check to be conducted by the Field Placement Office, students must select and complete the criminal background check consent form using the link above. Although fingerprints are not needed to meet University requirements, fingerprinting may be required by the specific site where your field experience(s) are scheduled. Your site supervisor or other site personnel will inform you of such a requirement.
Video Recording Consent Form
Students in education clinical experiences may be required to record themselves in the classroom. These recordings will be used to provide feedback and help students develop as educators. Please select and complete the Video Recording Consent form using the link above.
Bloodborne Pathogens Certificate Upload

Once complete, you will receive a confirmation document with your score, which should be submitted through the Bloodborne Pathogens Upload link for review. You must receive a score of at least 16/20 to pass.
Please Note: The confirmation may take up to 1 hour to receive after quiz completion.
Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS) Enrollment
Please follow the instructions on the Directions for Michigan Department of Education Teacher Tracking Enrollment document and upload the screenshot captured in the last step here: Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS) Enrollment
**NOTE: Students under 18 will need to utilize the CEHHS Underage Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS) Tracking Form, as the Michigan Department of Education does not allow persons under the age of 18 to create an account.** You will be asked to create an account after you turn 18.
We will verify your enrollment in the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS) and update the system within 2 business days.
Professional Standards of Practice Acknowledgement
Please review the CEHHS Professional Standards of Practice Policy for preservice teachers. When done, please select and complete the Professional Standards of Practice form using the link above.
Incoming students must attend both parts of the orientation experience:
- Orientation (Academic Advising and Registration) Day (Part 1)
- On your selected Orientation day, you will come to campus to orient yourself to the campus community, learn about campus resources and engagement opportunities, meet with your academic advisors to learn about degree planning, meet fellow incoming wolverines, and register for classes. The orientation program will run from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm, you must be present the entire time.
- Beginning in early March, upon submitting your enrollment deposit and creating your uniqname, you will have access to your Orientation Portal which provides a personalized step-by-step checklist of your orientation steps. To access your orientation portal and begin completing your steps, log in using your uniqname and password.
- Wolverine Welcome Day (Part 2)
- Held on Tuesday, August 25, this event is designed to help set your first semester off on the right foot with a series of events and activities to help acclimate you to campus before classes begin! You will automatically be registered for this event, when you select your orientation day. Visit the Wolverine Welcome Day website for more information
Submit Earned College Credit Documents (if applicable)
Any AP credits, dual enrollment, or early/middle college transcripts must be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions prior to your scheduled orientation session. Transcripts must be sent to UM-Dearborn directly from the issuing institution to be considered
The following is information specific to transfer students:
- Virtual Orientation (Academic Advising and Registration) Appointment (required)
- This virtual orientation academic advising and registration appointment is when you will meet with your Academic Advisor to review program requirements and register for your courses. Students must attend an advising appointment in order to have registration access granted for courses. As a reminder, students must have submitted the enrollment deposit and completed the Math Placement Exam (if required) in order to have access to register for an appointment. Instructions are found on the orientation portal once you have completed these steps to schedule your appointment beginning on March 26.
- Wolverine Welcome Day (required)
- Held on Tuesday, August 25, this event is designed to help set your first semester off on the right foot with a series of events and activities to help acclimate you to campus before classes begin! You will automatically be registered for this event, when you select your orientation day. Visit the Wolverine Welcome Day website for more information.
Submit All Official Transcripts
Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended before your first semester begins. Transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing institution (electronically or by mail) and must include a print date within one year of your application submission.
Transcripts submitted by students may be used for preliminary review but are not considered official. Failure to submit official transcripts may prevent course registration or financial aid disbursement, and failure to disclose all prior institutions may result in revocation of admission.
Wolverine Welcome Day
Wolverine Welcome Day is the final step in the orientation process for all incoming students each Fall semester. It will take place on Tuesday, August 25. You are highly encouraged to attend. See you there!
