Message from the Chair
History
Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering. We are proud to be a part of the Dearborn campus of the University of Michigan.
Our undergraduate and graduate programs combine University of Michigan quality and close contact with the industry. This provides first-class education and traditionally excellent employment opportunities to our students.
The recently added programs in Bioengineering and Materials Engineering, as well as our new doctoral programs have broadened our focus to include exciting new areas and more fundamentally oriented research. Still, educating engineers for local and national industry remains an important part of our mission. Nearly all of our students have co-op, internship, or other work experience during their studies. The master's programs in Mechanical Engineering and Automotive Systems Engineering are designed for working professionals, so courses in these programs are generally offered in the evenings from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. and include online sections where possible.
Our faculty are active in educational innovation, externally funded research, and service to community. They publish in leading scientific journals and write books. They have earned prestigious professional awards and serve on editorial boards. Several of them are fellows of national and international engineering societies.
The department is not small. At this writing, we are happy to have as members of our community over 500 undergraduate and 400 graduate students, as well as over 30 full-time, part-time, and research faculty and four staff members.
I thank you for browsing through our department's web site. Whatever your background and interest, you are welcome to visit the beautiful Dearborn campus of the University of Michigan, located next to the national historical site of the magnificent Henry Ford Estate.
