We are pleased to offer advising services conveniently in person or virtually, whichever fits your needs.
CECS Office of Advising and Academic Success
Your CECS advisors are partners in your academic success, and are here to help guide you through the curriculum requirements, academic policies, and campus resources. We look forward to working with you!
We Are Available In Person and Virtually
Advisors are able to answer questions you have regarding registration holds, class selection for the upcoming semesters, and many other questions through email. If your questions cannot be answered through email, your advisor may suggest scheduling an advising appointment.
Please follow these tips that will help your advisor to respond as quickly as possible:
- Include your full name and UMID in your email message.
- Please send your message from your UMICH email address if you are a current student.
- Please draft your email in a professional manner and clearly articulate your questions. Emailing your advisor is very different than texting your friends.
- Please note that including “URGENT” in your title or sending multiple messages will not yield a priority response. Emails are answered in the order they are received.

Advising Appointment Tips
We expect that you are proactive.
- Check to see when your registration date is and schedule an appointment well in advance to ensure your timely registration.
- If you have an advising hold on your account you must meet with your advisor before registering for courses.
- Advisors schedules may fill quickly during peak advising times, so don't delay in scheduling your appointment.
To get the most out of your advising appointment, please review the following tips to prepare:
- Review your program requirements and develop a graduation plan (be proactive, think ahead!). This includes reviewing your Degree Works audit and Pathway Plan prior to the appointment.
- Be prepared with a list of questions and have note-taking materials ready.
- If your appointment is virtual, please be in a safe, distraction-free location so that your appointment can be productive.
We expect that you be engaged in the advising process.
- Arrive On Time. If you are more than 10 minutes late we will ask you to reschedule your appointment. If you are unable to attend your appointment, please contact your advisor or use your student portal to cancel at least 24 hours in advance.
- We're here to help point you in the right direction, but first we want to learn about your academic and career goals.
- Write notes for things you will need later.
- Ask questions when you don't understand!
We expect that you review your notes.
- Save a copy of your academic plan, keep it handy to refer back to when needed.
- Register for the courses planned during your appointment, don't wait until the last minute.
- If you have follow-up questions, email your advisor.
